RandMcNally RVND 7710 Tripmaker GPS

While on vacation last week; a friend of ours was telling me about the GPS unit he had purchased. We also visited a C/W not long after the discussion and I purchased a Rand McNally GPS unit.

It allows you to program the weight and the height of your camping unit. It seems to be working well so far. I really like how large the screen is on it. The only problem I’m having with it is keeps saying “Speed Warning” for some reason. I guess I need to be a little more cautious where it seems to be catching me in those short speed zones.

It’s an RVND 7710 model and I was just curious if anyone else is using it and how you like it?

We have this unit. Liking it so far, but still learning everything it can do! If that speed warning feature gets annoying, I think you can turn it off. Disclaimer - I am not advocating speeding . I got it for the screen size too. Figured the larger the map the better when trying to navigate, and knew it would not be right by my face anywhere I placed it in the truck. FYI they now have a sun visor available for it, as well as a nice hard case to store it in. We got a kick out of how you can even change the little icon that represents your vehicle on the scree. I have never had a GPS, so it's all new to me and fun to explore!

Got one on 29 June and it crashed this past Saturday which was the first time I went to take it for a test drive. Sent it back to RM yesterday at my own expense for warranty repair/replacement. Guess I just got one that was built on a Monday. Will let you know how I really like it when I get it back in a couple of weeks. Seems to have a lot of good potential.

I got the 5510 with the smaller screen last fall. I like the unit (I also raised the speed warning to activate at 10 mph over instead of 5 over). I don't think it is as user friendly as the Garmin NUVI I use in my car but overall I am happy with the unit. It is identical to yours other than the 5" screen instead of 7" screen.

The funny thing about the “Speed Warning” is my friend told me he sat his to alarm at 10 MPH above the speed limit. I told him that I wouldn’t need it that I drove close to the speed limit. Normally I don’t get much over 1-2 MPH over the posted limit so I thought I would be ok since the default was 5 MPH over on the warning. What I didn’t realize is how easy it is to go over the limit in the zones whenever they change on you; so the joke was on me! At least I kept them entertained for a while. My grand-daughter now counts and lets me know how many times it has gone off. Maybe I should change the setting on it or even turn it off but it could keep me from getting a fine.

I turn the sound down on mine so no one can hear the speed warnings but I can see it turn red.
We have had ours over a year and like it. We used it about ten times today for tourist locations.
Ours is the 5510, at the time they did not make the 7710 model.

We like ours also. You can also set the distance before the speed limit change you want to be notified, I believe. I actually get a number of warnings because I have it out a ways. Towing the trailer I want warning when I need to slow down as I may be looking for a gas stop or a place to eat while trying to keep an eye on the traffic in front. The speed zone change can be easily ignored and I don't want to be helping fund any towns along my route.

WE have used ours for almost a year and love it. I like the fact you can add custom POI's and the unit will treat them as their own.

Can you import a trip from map quest, google maps or Microsoft Streets and Trips???

Our 8 year old Garmin does not allow me to do that and there are places (like Chicago) where the Garmin will route me through downtown rather that the bypass. It's a royal pain to add a via point to force the Garmin to use the bypass.

I don't know if that can be done. There Is some information on their website. www.randmacnally.com

The problem with yours is it's an EIGHT year old Garmin. Before I got the Garmin 465T, I had a street pilot. It still works and is now in my work truck but it's so old that Garmin doesn't support it anymore. The newer models can be programmed to bypass places you don't want to go.
