Worn GM truck front hubs/bearings

I just got my oil/filter changed at the dealer (use my own stuff and it is cheap enough that I don't do it myself - besides I have a hell of a time getting up off the creeper).

Well, I was informed that both front hubs/bearings need to be replaced. Huh? 100k miles. That didn't sound right so I jacked her up and sure enough-the wheels are loose as a goose. My GMC is a 2002 and it seems that it is a common problem from what I read on the net.

So, those of you with Chevy/GMC trucks may want to check for worn bearings too! I am assuming that this applies to all models of these GM trucks.

Well, I was quoted $1250 for the job so I looked for parts and found them on Amazon as well as many other places. Seems Timken is the way to go and here is the link to the parts as well as a link detailing how to DIY.

This Amazon link is for 2002 2500HD hubs. You will need to do research if you have a different year/model.

The hub is also available on EBAY from the same seller but free shipping.

I had one go on my truck at around 93,000 miles. It was bad before then but started making noise. The other side is starting to get a little loose too. It is still a common problem. I had the one replaced for $400. Had another quote for over $500.
It is not just for 2500's but also 1500's and 3500's... so I was told, anyway.

I changed mine myself, in the driveway. Did not take much more than an hour and a half. Seems to me I replaced the left at about 100,000 mles, then replaced the right at about 160,000.
Shop around for parts. Dieselplace.com, in the do it yourself section, shows how to do it yourself. Just make sure you have a breaker bar, and the right size socket for the hub nut from the 4wd.

Just change my right bearing/hub. Change it myself. This is the 2nd bearing hub replacement at 105,000. Time for replacement 1 hr 45 minutes. Cost 540.00 retail, 349.00 wholesale. Not a hard job as long as the hub is not rusted in place.

You were wise going with Timken. I've changed several now on another truck plus my Jimmy and never had a problem after going with Timken.

Torque the center nut to 177 ft pounds.
