East Yellowstone Entrance/Exit

I want to belay any fears that anyone might have about exiting Yellowstone Park to the East. I pulled out of there on Wednesday and it was a great ride!!! Nice, wide, 2 lane roads with good surfaces. You have to climb Sylvan Pass (8500') but it is an easy climb. Several 25 mph curves, BUT, the roads were so wide that it was a piece of cake. The real beauty is what lies past the East entrance: Shoshone National Forest.....Absolutely beautiful!!!! Tall, majestic passes that run along both sides of the hiway and the river, and then you come to Buffalo Bill Dam, this is the one that Hoover dam was modeled after. Then you pass through three tunnels (plenty of head room) and down into Cody, WY. My BIL, who has been fifth wheeling for ten years is somewhat apprehensive when it comes to mountain passes. He would rather go around, than thru. He doesn't know what he is missing. He is always suggesting I go around these roads.

I must admit that I have taken the advice of MOC'ers several times over his and am glad I did.

So, If you're inclined to exit YNP to the east, I say "Go for it!!!! You'll be glad you did!!!!!!"

On that strip from east gate to Cody is where we sited the grizzlies, Mother and yearling cubs, beside the road.

Yes, that's a beautiful climb out of Yellowstone. We did it several years ago and would do the same thing again if the opportunity presents itself.

Phil,
The east exit to Cody is a cakewalk, if you contiue east from Cody is when it gets exciting. We didn't find the road bad or exceptionally narrow just one long, steep grade on the way. The campground owner in Buffalo told us he gets around 3 dozen rv's a year there looking for brakes and or transmissions.

Charlie, Which route did you take from Cody to Buffalo? Our plan is to go 14 to Greybull, then 16/20 to Worland, then 16 over Powder River Pass to Buffalo. Can't really see another route unless one goes to Thermopolis then to Casper then up US25 to Buffalo. This seem like a long way to go to avoid the mountains.

Phil,
We took 14 all the way across to I-25. The campground owner told us that the route you have laid out is better but we don't know that for a fact. 14 isn't a bad road, just has that long 10%+ grade up and down.
Enjoy the trip

Phil,

2 years ago we took the East Gate into Cody. Saw our only moose feeding along side the road. Have they finished the road construction in the park?

There is some construction going on, but for the most part, roads are pretty good. We spotted that moose also, that must be his territory.

My husband and I are planning our first long trip to Yellowstone in our Monty for September of next year! We live in Central Texas (just north of Austin) and have looked at various routes with map programs and our GPS. We are looking at staying at Fishing Bridge Campground. Yellowstone will be our first looooong trip. We plan to stay 6 nights.

Do you all have any advice regarding routes to Yellowstone from central Texas, number of miles per day to travel, campgrounds to stay at along the way (we think we will need 5 days at @ 300-350 miles/day), other campgrounds in or at Yellowstone? Is about 300 miles a day a good relaxing speed. How is Fishing Bridge - we heard it is kinda of close? Will we be able to get our 38' Monty in and out easily? Any advice/help will be appreciated!
