Basement Organizers

I did some review on the forum's basement organizing posts and saw several really good ideas over the past few years. I was just curious if anyone has any good techniques (given the large amount of box stores devoted to organization), or updated concepts for basement organization?

Our last 5Th was much smaller with a very small basement, and given the cavern I'm going to have now, it seems things could shift a lot. Hook had a good suggestion about Rubbermaid boxes and doing labels and inventory, but is there a good way to keep them secure after they're stacked? Is there a good size people have found that fits well underneath (maybe a combination of sizes)? What do you think about clear versus opaque? I had cheap shallow ones in the past. I dropped them and they split wide open; so which brand do you all use if that's your storage method?

I was amazed at how much stuff we pulled out of the old 5th, and now I need to organize, label, and design a storage plan for the new Monty. Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

We have plastic trunks from Wally World. Each has wheels under one end for easy sliding in and out. The lids are hinged and have metal latches to keep them closed. The lids are notched so that they can be stacked without sliding around. We have eight in our basement, with plenty of room for other things such as lawn chairs, lawn rug and the DirecTV dish and tripod. Each trunk is numbered and we keep a list of the contents of each for easy reference.

We also use the wally world trunks and were able to get them in three colors so ours are color coded. We also use four Dewalt toolboxes because they have a large storage compartment in the bottom and at top that has adjustable small areas under a clear plastic lid. One big open tote holds our water equipment and the lid goes on it upside down creating a shelf for our anaconda and EMS. Take the electrical out and hook it up and then lift the lid and take what water things we are going to use. We have filters, regulators, splitters, a back flow preventer and a softener besides all the various lengths of hoses we carry and a heated hose so we do need the room.

Inventory, inventory and inventory the items you will be taking. THEN, buy tubs that will hold what you plan on taking. Load plan the tubs according to size and weight. It's a process.

I have found that plastic milk boxes work for me- They are stackable and you can see through the holes at the contents- They are readily available at flea markets- There are square boxes and oblong boxes- The oblong boxes are for the 50 amp power cords- JMHO- Don

Thanks all. I hope we get some additional input as I'm really curious what works for people, and what they've found that doesn't work. I'm going to head to Wally World tomorrow and take a look at their bins and start some planning.

If you can't find the tubs with the latches, try again. We found that Wally World only keeps a few on hand. They don't reorder until the shelf is empty. We bought two to start with so that we could see how they would fit. It took two or three additional trips to find the next six that we wanted.

We have two of the Wally World trunks with end wheels and metal latches. Since going full time in March we are still tweaking our basement storage area. I have a small frig mounted down there along with a ceramic heater. I am still in the "what do I really need" mode. I may end up with two more of the same large trunks and finally be organized.

Knowing your basement dimensions helps tremendously. We were fortunate that our plastic Rubbermaid bins worked on the last two rigs. In the 3750, they only fit longways and were not too efficient. In the 3850, the same bins fit sideways (prevents movement) since the basement is about 5 inches wider. Some things are better to do after delivery so you don't make purchases that you may regret since better options may be available. For instance, we wanted a sliding basement organizer (really like the Mor-Ryde offerings, but the 3750 basement was not wide enough, the 3850 will and the sliding tray is on the mod list.
