When I couple and de-couple, I always (now) make sure the electric brakes on the trailer are fully engaged. I have a habit of backing too hard into the hitch pin to make sure it is fully locked. This usually backs up the whole unit an inch or two unless I have the brakes locked. My DW doesn't hesitate to let me know when I cause the trailer to shift. Hmmmm.

I assume you engage the brakes on the rig by pulling the emergency break-away cable. If that was me, I'd forget to reinsert it when finished. So, my Roto-Choks lock the rig solid and it can't move forward or back once inserted. As for backing hard into the king pin goes, I believe that it may seem like you're backing hard into it, but in reality it's just metal against metal and it's "bark" is bigger than it really is. Our hitch is a Trailer Saver and when you back into it, it makes positive connection with the king pin. The head on the hitch is much like the head on the hitches used by semis.
