National Weather Radios

I saw a thread on this somewhere, however, I am unable to locate it today. I am interested in a radio for my 5er and a radio I can carry with me that will pick up or sound an alarm for weather warnings. I can use my CB while on the road, however, while camping or hiking/riding I am in the dark. Does anybody use these radios or could recommend one?

Mike-- We have an Oregon Scientific Model WR601 here at home and it is AC/DC and about the size of a small walkie talkie! So, it can be carried along as you are hiking or whatever! It works for us and we also have a portable weather radio in the Monte but I can't give you the name or model because it is still sleeping from the winter nap. Have to go out and wake it up real soon so we can use it! Got the spring fever for the Monte but haven't had the time to go out and take care of the home on wheels yet! Heading for Nebraska this year? You can always attend the Central Plains Regional Rally in July! This has been a CPRR promotional ad!

we have a desk top style from radio shack in the Monty and a scanner type in the F350 for weather info...both work well..also have the weather radar on our HTC desire..thats works well too...shows you where you are and where all the weather is...just like the radar screens the weather man shows you on the news channels...

I’m not sure of the brand but we have one that you can even hand crank for power so you can listen to it if desired. It runs from batteries or it’s even solar powered. I’ve seen similar ones at Wal-mart and I think they are under $20.00.

I've got a small one from Radio Shack. I am listening to a warning as I type this. I've had it for years but it is called NOAA weather radio, Cat #12-254. That may no longer be accurate. As I said, I've had it for years. About $19 I think then.

Also look for radios with S.A.M.E technology.

S.A.M.E. technology (Specific Area Message Encoding), which preprograms the device to receive only those warnings that apply to your local area--you can choose state, county, and/or nearby counties.

I find those numbers at NOAA web site.

We have a Midland S.A.M.E. weather radio in both the house and the 5er.
At home it is easy. I just set it to alarm for our county and the adjacent counties to the west (as that is the direction all our heavy weather comes from).
On the road, you need to know what county you are in so that you can set the alarm to react to severe weather in that county or nearby counties.
