Labor Day Plans

I kept putting off making reservations for Labor Day and called about a month ago...only to be put on a waiting list at every park I called! ....I so miss the day of going camping on a whim!
So now I dont know where we will be ....but I have a feeling it wont be in a campground...I am thinking the driveway at best or if we get really bored I guess we could do the Wal~Mart thing..lol

Know how you feel. Back in the early 70's If you got to a campsite before 4:00 PM on a Friday afternoon you got a spot.
Now days you need to book 6 months in advance. I still own a fleet of school buses where we live so I know what I'll
be doing on the long weekend. We do a lot more camping between September and May, and leave the Parks for people with kids in the summer months. Parks are way to busy for us this time of year anyway's.

To avoid the Labor Day hassle we decided to stay put right here and pull out on Tuesday for Tennessee and Indiana. As a full timer the 3 summer holidays can be a real pain in the butt for someone who hates to make reservations.

We made last minute reservations at Charlestown State Park in Southern Indiana. I think this park is fairly new and a lot of people don't know about it yet. They still had plenty of sites left as of a couple days ago.
I too remember back in the 70 - 80's when you didn't decide to go camping till Friday afternoon when you got off work and it was usually first come first serve on the sites with some left over but I am afraid those days are long gone and we are in a different era now in that you have to plan way ahead seems like for just camping on any given weekend. To many of us Baby Boomers getting back into camping I guess. Here in Indiana with the increase in gas prices and raising the price of camping to $28 bucks a night that there would be a decrease in the amount of campers, but these State Parks are staying full around here every weekend.

We would stay right here at Campus RV Park in Independence, MO, if we could. However, the entire park is pre-booked for the big Santa-Cali-Gon festival. Independence was the starting point for the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon trails. Thus the festival name. So, we'll move 15 miles, on Thursday, to Trailside RV Park in Grain Valley, MO, and move back here on Labor Day. We will stick with the quieter private parks for the big holiday. We like state and corps parks but they'll be way too noisy that weekend for us. Or any summer weekend.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day are all good weekends to stay home. Traffic's bad, campgrounds and lakes are crowded, it's hot (usually), tempers are short...don't need the hassle...JMHO.

Since we're still working, we really look forward to these long weekends for camping. Made reservations in Feb. for every trip we took this year. WE'll be spending Labor Day in Howe, IN at the Twin Mills campground. Stacy

We will at the Fifty Point Conservation Area near Grimsby, ON on the south shore of Lake Ontario. A big area with a reasonably secluded campground, marina, bike/hiking trails, restaurant, beach, and picnic areas. Lots of room for people to spread out and enjoy themselves without crowding anyone.

We never made reservations either, so from Friday through Monday we'll be in our own private campground! Our property!! We'll be moving the Monty back up in the driveway so we can hook up to 30 amp. We can go fishing, hiking, hunting, birdwatching, hang out at the beach, campfires & parties at the lake, etc...usually friends come over off & on all weekend. Everyone have a safe holiday no matter where you end up.

We plan to leave Westminster, VT on Tuesday after Labor Day and head over to the Lake George, NY area. We haven't made any reservations because I suspect everyone well clear
out on Monday. Everyone except us retirees that is. I hope to spend a couple of days there. If we can't, we can always come back to the Lake and the stick house.

For many years (since we stopped tent camping) we have tried to stay off the roads during holidays. That means out of campgrounds also unless we are parked there anyway. My birthday is Thursday and all my daughters will be here over the weekend. That is the way we have spent Labor Day for many years. So Monty will be a guest house this weekend.

We're leaving tomorrow around, noon, when the oldest one gets out of kindergarten. There are about 20 of us that go to a place called Dillon Beach, which is near Bodega Bay, CA. This is the 15th year we have been making this Labor Day Weekend trip. Family, friends and a good time had by all.
