Drain the - water tank

I think most of us do it that park at sites with out water service and bring our own or fill up the freah water tank at the water fill station. When we break camp and head for home I drain the fresh water tank, unnecessary carry weight. To many times at at a traffic light some body signals me to lower my window and tells me I have something leaking out of the back of my camper or even at the dump station I have had people tell me the same thing. It`s kinda a pain to get to my drain valve under the camper anyway and it`s just a 3/8 hose that takes forever to drain out the water.
So what to do. Modify the drain hose.
Pulled out the small drain hose bought one of these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and used a hole saw to cut it in. a couple feet of 1 ˝ inch pipe and one of these, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and the exit pipe and valve is right behind the rear tire. So just before I leave the site now I don`t have to get under the camper and I can drain the tank in 20 seconds flat.
Now I don`t have to listen to……. “hey!- hey!!! buddy!!!! did you know you have something leakin from of you camper”
Wife says can`t wait for the winter to get over with cause I have waaaaay to much time on my hands and come up with these crazy ideas.

You dump the water on your site before pulling out??? Bad enough on a paved pad. But surely you don’t dump it on a gravel, rock, or grassy site for the next person pulling in.

You do know there`is about 20 gals. left. I did see people running around screaming and crying about how the ground got wet after a rain on one trip not sure how you would handle it.

Out of respect for my fellow campers, I would not leave a wet or muddy site for the next person arriving. If I pulled into a site that should be dry, and I stepped into mud, I would not be a happy camper, pun intended. Neither would I be if the dog or grandkids come tracking mud into the trailer.

I would go to a dump station, or area away from all foot traffic, or take it home.

You said “So just before I leave the site now I don`t have to get under the camper and I can drain the tank in 20 seconds flat.
Now I don`t have to listen to……. “hey!- hey!!! buddy!!!! did you know you have something leakin from of you camper”

That sounds an awful lot like you dump your fresh water in 20 seconds just before you leave your site so you are not draining the water going down the highway. If I misinterpreted that then I apologize.

I really like this mod! It is a real pain to get under the trailer to reach the small current valve. However, I am always looking out for my fellow campers and would never intentionally drain a tank that was going to leave a mess for the next person. I don't see any issue draining a tank on the pavement a little at a time though so maybe sticking with the little valve is the way to go?

Not to get into the wet campsite argument but I might actually have to add water before I left the park since my rig rides far better with 1/3 of a tank back there.

I am looking for the backflow valve. It can also double as an outside water dispenser.

I was at a NASCAR race at Texas Motor Speedway one year. We camped just outside of turn 1 and it was a large paved area. We had a large section of indoor/outdoor carpet on the ground on the side of our rig. We also had chairs, tables, coolers and other stuff on top of that carpet. We always left the day after the race due to the traffic congestion. One year there was someone who decided that they wanted to empty their water tank before they left and just dumped it right where they were parked. Guess what? We were down hill from that same person and got flooded. Everything on the ground was completely soaked. I came out of our rig and saw what had happened just as they were pulling out. I WAS NOT A HAPPY CAMPER!

If I am going to dump my water tanks I wait until I get home and dump on MY driveway.

Am I missing something here? What is the rush to drain the tank UNLESS it is your last trip of the season and will be winterizing?

Great question. I have no clue. I only dump my fresh water tank for winter prep or if I know I'm not going to be using my rig for awhile. Again, I always do this at home.

Weight and sloshing effect. Not to mention folks have had tanks drop out of their rigs going down the road when straps broke. Haven’t heard that on here about keystones but certainly on SOBs.

I should clarify there is a difference between carrying just a couple gallons to emergency flush the toilet and carrying a half full or more tank......

I only carry a full tank to our local campgrounds. There is nearly a dozen COE campgrounds within 1hr from our home and only two have water. None have sewage. The one next to the marina where our cabin cruiser is docked is 15 minutes away but no water.

Carrying water in your tank make sense if you are going to a spot that does not have water. I always carry some fresh water primarily for bathroom breaks in the event we cannot find a full service rest area. Other than that we always have full hook ups when camping. That's how the DW likes it. No "roughing it" for her.

That's my DW too. We didn't buy a 42' luxury 5th wheel to camp like tent campers LOL...... Have to admit I'm getting soft in my old age. In my younger days I have slept in the open bed of pickups, casting deck of my bass boat and seat of my 4 wheeler (in a mosquito infested swamp no less) but these days it sure is nice to have that compfy A/C cooled home away from home to end a day of kayaking and fishing.....

I understand everything you say and I guess my statement wasn't clear. What I don't understand is the "need" to drain it so fast such as in 20 seconds. The 1/2" drain does the job plenty fast for me.

I was looking at the running the line to side of unit so you don’t have to crawl under being best part of his mod. You could do that without having to drill out tank

The thing I would be concerned with is with it being such a big opening it would be easier for the tank to get contaminated. However, flushing the tank would not be possible. Could go either way on that one.

Would be fun to have a grandkid open the valve if the 90 was not installed.
