Queen Size Bed

I know the difference between the king and queen beds. Anyone have a queen bed in a Montana 3121 or 3120? If so, can you tell me how much room is between the mattress and the wall on both sides of the bed. Wife is concerned about having room to make bed on left side next to closet. All units we have looked at have only king beds. Thanks.

Don't have that model, but we have a 3720 and before that a 3667. We cut both beds down, junked the crappy king mattress and added a good queen mattress. In both rigs we had room to walk around the bed on both sides and a good nights sleep.

We bought a new 3121 in August. First thing the next morning cut down the platform and put in a good queen mattress.

Most bedrooms are the same layout. We also cut our down and put in a queen.

Some how the argument, " We are camping do we really need to make the bed" doesn't fly

Yeah, what's with that? Making the bed...my job.

Ditto removing the king and cutting down the plywood base for a queen. Ours is a similar footprint to the 3120/21. We don't have a king at home either and prefer the extra space around the bed.

Not really sure what the actual space is around the bed and the 5er is wrapped up for the winter. However, you can look at the space that's there now and add about 6" per side of extra space

So it appears cutting down the plywood base to fit a queen is the answer. I did not know if the frame base was all the same size, king or queen. Now I know.

Thanks for all the replies.

Measures 16" bed to wall on each side. 8" narrower each side inside the slide. Cutting down the plywood was all that was necessary to make the swap.

Queen bed

I looked at both. Bought a Queen, can't imagine trying to fight with making up a king.

Our unit came with a king and we had the dealer cut the platform down so it would handle a queen mattress. We have ended up with a "sleep number" mattress and will not be without it. The only problem we have in making the bed is putting on a fitted sheet and we normally do that as a pair so we can put the head of the bed on first then stretch the sheet to the base. It can be done with one person but it takes a bit. The problem is reaching up to the head of the bed or you can slide the mattress down to put the head of the bed on first. Had to cut a couple of holes in the bed frame and the platform to accommodate the power plug and the two air lines going to the mattress but that was no problems. To figure what your distance is take a tape and measure the distance from the frame to the trim on the slide out sides. This will be your distance you have besides the distance of the slide trim to the closet or cabinet/wall beyond the trim. The frame is normally the width of a queen size mattress.

We have a 3160RL, 36ft Montana. It is just about a same floor plan as yours, expect kitchen sides are on opposite sides. We went to a queen mattress, had a local Michigan company that makes mattress that are shorter than a normal bed. You will need a queen that measures 60x75. As far as how much room do you gain, look at it this way, a king measures 78”wide, a queen measures 60”wide. So you will gain 18” total, about 9” on each side. Hope this helps!

Went from king to queen on 2018 3121rl

Recently replaced our King to a Queen, was an Easy task. We Enjoy the extra 8-9 inches on each side making it MUCH easier to making the bed.

Using an Egg Create 4" dense foam mattress pad provides a very comfortable sleep experience also...

We have a 2019 3855BR. Had dealership swapp out the king for a quality queen. After cutting down the plywood we gained bout 6 inches on both sides. Easier to make bed & access the security access storage area below the head of bed.

Most of the KING beds in RV are 72” vs 78” regular king

My wife and I just purchased a 3120RL and had them cut the platform to fit our queen mattress. We have always had a queen mattress and wanted the extra room for moving around the bed. We are happy with that decision. The extra space is sufficient that we have no issues making the bed.

In my opinion a king bed is not a selling point in any fifth wheel I've seen. Just my 2 cents.

Not a lot of difference. We cut ours down to a queen.

And I wouldn't own an RV without a King bed. The bed size is not everyone's complaint, the space around it is. If you pick the right floor plan this is not an issue. That is why we have a 3700RL. I make the bed and I can walk all the way around it without being confined.

Unfortunately, at least for us, Montana has gone to the "cave" bedroom design in a lot of floor plans, hence the lack of real estate to alllow mobility.

It makes perfect sense that some want a queen and some want a king. What's interesting to me is whenever we look at trailers in our neck of the woods virtually all of the 5ers have king beds in them. When asked why we are told that that's what "everybody" wants.

On a practical level, it is easier to cut down the platform for a queen than it is to "grow" the platform for a king so I suppose it makes sense from a sales perspective to offer kings as a general rule.
