Hitch retaining pins
I remove my hitch a few times a year and recently when I mount the hitch to the bed rails I face the retaining pins with the clips out so it is easier to remove the clips.Does this make a difference?

It makes no difference other than the pins MUST be there and the locking clips in place. Whatever direction you use, does not matter for the pin or the locking clips. I use what's easy myself, and it's not always the same direction because I am not always oriented in the same place each time I reinstall the hitch parts, the pins or the clips.
If it was important I am pretty sure they would make the item go in one way or put some easy to read warning label in place. I have not seen these on any hitch base so far.

Technically it makes no difference. I put mine on the inside to make it just a little harder to get at so they are less likely to be pulled by unwanted people.

I'm with camper4, I put the clips on the inside where people won't see them and be tempted. I had someone tempted by the release handle on our hitch once, there's just no accounting for some people

I put mine on the inside, mainly because I get into the bed to get things out of the tool box and if they're on the inside I can't knock one out by accident.

Ditto - I saw a group of kids walk behind a cattle trailer stopped an a stop light one time and one reached over and unlatched the handle on the tailgate as they walked by. If the truck had continued on the road and one of the cattle bumped the gate it would have popped open. Could have been a disaster and possible deadly to other drivers not to mention the cattle. Luckily in this case other people noticed and notified the driver before he continued.
Make no mistake there are people who will unlatch your trailer and/or your hitch "just for kicks".

Interesting topic in that I had never really thought about my normal positioning of the pins, but it turns out that I have always had the cotter type clips on the inside of the hitch. I now realize that this orientation does have the added benefit of hiding from normal view what could be an easily sabotaged setup. After reading this thread, I now will be certain to keep the clips on the inside and out of direct view!!

Agreed ... if I'm hitched to the rig, there's a lock on the release handle. An absolute rule and habit for me.

That is a good idea. I thought about it but haven't done it yet. Just try to stay in the habit of checking the pins when the truck is left unattended for a while. It just takes a quick look to make sure all the pins are there.
