Hesitating Superduty

I have experienced some hesitation on hard acceleration in my '06 F350 since day one. I wanted to wait till I had it broken in well before asking this. I now have a little over 25000 miles and when I hit the accelerator hard the truck will bog for a few seconds and take off like it was trying to tear the tires off. Any good diesel mechs out there with a gut feeling on this??

I think that is a characteristic of the 6.0 - if you find out otherwise I would be curious.

We went from a 7.3 to 6.0 and that was the first thing I noticed different. I test drove 3 different trucks to make sure it wasn't a unique problem. If I had one complaint, that would be it.

I understand the 6.4 does not share that characteristic.

I agree with Ozz, I think its called Turbo Lag? GBY....

Same here on my 6.4L..I can feel no turbo lag at all.

On the 6.0 my experience has been have it warmed up before you tow
for it has no power. 04 450 superduty

I have the same thing with my 06. I agree that its turbo lag, but once the turbo spools up she takes off. But you have to drive it like you stold it or the turbo can carbon up and the vanes will stick...from what I have heard. Take it in and have Ford tell you what the problem is.

I always have to grin a little when everybody says "drive it like you stole it", including my Dealer. I assume they refer to driving it hard; however in my experience stolen cars are typically driven better than a little old lady's Buick on Sunday so as not to attract attention. When I was with law enforcement, we always commented that if the guy is upright and doing the speed limit, its a stolen car.

You know what I am referring to when I say "Like you stold it"; "Put the pedal to the metal", "Punch it", "Blow the carbon out of it", etc.... These trucks are made to work hard, and if you don't work them hard they tend to have issues. Now I don't beat my truck, nor do I promote anyone beating their truck. Just give it want it wants and needs...work! You know, like pulling your 3400RL up and over the pass every once and awhile.

Yep - that's what I do Fire5er. In fact, it's fun. Also watch prolonged idle. The Service Manager said that is the leading cause of the buildup in the turbo.

guess I have to put a lead sheet in my right shoe, I have never noticed a lag. How would I know if the turbo is getting carboned?

My truck is an 05 and the first diesel I have had so I probably would not notice the problem. The thing I do know about my truck is when I went in for 25K service and a recall things got changed. There was a second recall that I had not gotten a notice on, the one I went in for was putting a sticker somewhere. The other recall was reprograming the computer.

When I left the dealer and pulled onto the road there was heavy traffic so I hit and could not believe the power. I hit it again, same thing, more power then I had experienced in the 25K miles. I turned around and went back to the dealer and asked the service technician what he did to my truck. His reply was, you don't like it. I said I just wanted to know if it was me. He said the recall was a consumer fix, more power at low end. Interesting what a computer can do.

Hmm my 05 does not have anything like the turbo lag you are describing. I was actually surprised at the lack of lag. I have been driving Turbo's for years,but this is my first turbo truck.. I was way ready for poor response but this heavy beast rocks it.

I had an '04 F250 6.0 and now have an '07 F350 6.0. Both had/have the same lag you mention. After getting used to it, it sort of becomes second nature to anticipate it.

All I can say is I love my 03 with a 7.3 and Garret Ball Bearing Turbo! No lag at all.

I agree, if I started out with this 6.0 I don't' think I would have gave it a second thought, but jumping out of my 7.3 into a 6.0 for a test drive made me think something was wrong with the new truck. Right in front of the Dealer I tried to make a left turn across traffic. The truck wouldn't go and I just surrendered and waited until I had more room. I told the Dealer something was wrong, but it turns out they were all that way. The one I bought was not even the one I test drove.

The only good thing is my rear tires last a lot longer, and I'm not breaking the rear end loose every time I accelerate on those new white vinyl crosswalk markings they are using now instead of paint. That 7.3 used to wipe its feet on all of those things, especially when they were wet .

The first time I ever towed any long distance w/my 7.3 I went to Niagara Falls towing my old TT ( 8500 lbs loaded up). I decided to give it a real test on a 9% grade and let off of the gas and let it coast to around 45 mph and then got back in it, oh how sweat it was right back up to 65 without even breaking a sweat, egt's never went over 1000 degrees. Just wanted to see what the old girl could do.

Well...I do think ALL Diesel's have the "lag" (Turbo spool up delay before the poof, whoa look out she's alive!!). As a gaser till 2yr's ago I notice it whilst my foot hits the peddle and "nuttin" happens for few seconds then it comes to life...whew!
BUT I love my Diesel for its never ending power in dead of summer running my Air Conditioner while pulling my luxury suite (Montana) and no worries about how the Engine temperature is managing the load...in fact I think it likes to be worked hard!!!
--I'm so disappointed the Mfr's are making them less noisy-- I like people trying to tell me I got lifter problems!
