Pin box question

I have 2019 3720RL, would changing my pin box to a different one, would this help me on dips and bridges ? My ride seem to bottom out in these situations and I want to save my tires and get a smother ride. Jerome &Judy thanks for any input.

You did not indicate what pinbox you are using now. Airbags would be one option.

There are three possibilities. One is to add air bags to your truck. Second is to buy an air ride hitch such as the Trailsaver or similar. And a third is to buy an air ride pin box such as 5th Airborne or Trailair or similar.

If your truck is sitting low on the springs when hitched, the truck air bags would be what you need to keep from "bottoming out" on dips. First question would be, are you overloaded?

If you just need something to soften the ride, then an air ride hitch or an air ride pin box will help with that. I think the hitch, while more expensive, is the better solution. But since we don't tow that many miles I installed a 5th Airborne pin box. And I can see it moving up and down over dips to soften the ride and impact on the trailer, and remove most of what little chucking I had with the standard pin box.

Last summer at the annual Rally, quite a few folks with new rigs changed their pin boxes to MoRyde which is the kind Keystone used to put on their rigs. I took notice because that was an expense I didn't expect to see owners of new rigs making.

You mention dips and bridges, which tells me that your truck suspension is bottoming out. An air ride hitch will not help in this situation. You need air bags and or new shocks. If you have more than 50,000 miles on your truck than the stock shocks are probably not doing their job any more. If you are pulling with a 3/4 ton or a SRW 1 ton then you probably need the air bags. I put air bags and Bilstein shocks on my 3/4 ton and it handles the dips and bridges much better now.

Assuming your 2500 is rated for 10000 I am willing to bet you are close to 1400 pounds maybe more over carrying capacity. I do not think a pin box would help.

Have you hit the scales yet?

You need about 60 pounds of air in the bags when hooked up. I run 25 unloaded.

Have to agree with jeffba. I am thinking not enough truck. Don't know how much cargo you are carrying, but my 3720 comes in at 16,400 lbs. First place to start is the scales.

Definitely overloaded on the the truck rear axle. Air bags are not going to help, nor will an air hitch or air pinbox.

mtlakejim is right, get a one ton diesel dually, especially if you plan on doing any towing in mountainous areas.

Seriously if you have airbags already then it is a matter of getting the right pressure for the load, I had the Mor-ryde pin box on our 3790RD towing it with a 2015 2500hd duramax with Firestone Airbags. The pin weight was right around 2900lbs and I ran 18psi in the air bags, never bottomed out, towed level, no chucking etc. I upgraded to a 2017 3500 SRW and find the ride much better when not towing but I much preferred the 2500hd with airbags ride when towing, the 3500hd squats much more. Your truck is fine for towing, don't know what the pin box is now on Montana's but I really like the Mor-ryde.

BTW just so you are aware (don't let the weight police on this forum tell you different). The spring pack on the 2500hd is 7 leafs all in one pack, the spring pack on the 3500hd is 7 leafs however only 5 are in one pack, then there are two more overload springs.. This is the reason the 3500hd rides better unloaded than the 2500hd. Otherwise there is no real difference...

As stated in previous posts the scale is the only way to make an informed decision about your Problem. Anything else is just speculation.

Actually, that's not true. The other real difference is dual tires. When you do check your weight compare the weight on the rear tires to the weight rating of your tires. You may find that even if you have the best tires you can buy you're stessing them big time.
