FYI, if you are travelling south/north on I-35 through Austin, TX there is a bypass (TX-130) that is a toll road. To put it bluntly, driving through Austin SUCKS. Without a toll tag it will cost you about $1/mile. With a toll tag it drops to about half of that. I took the bypass one time without a tag and yes it was sticker shock. I requested and got two tags, one for the truck and one for the trailer and the cost is now ~$15 for the bypass. I feel the relief from the stress of driving through Austin is worth the $15.

TX-130 is an incredible road. And as said above, if you get a tag in advance, you can save some significant money. I-35 through Austin is so depressing. I think the money I save in gas pays for the toll.

Are there any info sites or books that give toll road warnings? By the time we saw the Denver toll road it was too late to look for an alternative? Like he said $37,ouch.

I think that is the same one we were mailed the toll from a few years ago after going around Denver. I knew the night before that part of our next days route was on a toll but that Sunday morning we never did see a booth, any signs, or a place where you paid. Didn't really think much about it until we got the bill in the mail.

There's a toll road north of Toronto, Ontario so you can avoid the often busy 401 through the city. It costs about $20 to go for most of it with a regular vehicle. If you take a semi or a truck and trailer, you should have a transponder and if you don't, you get charged a lot of money to take it. So when we don't have the trailer with us, we sometimes take the toll road, but if we have the trailer, we will take another road.

We traveled from the Chicago area to DC a couple months ago; paid about $125 in tolls in one day. Google maps is now set to avoid tolls, but it has taken on some "scenic" routes.

I avoid E470 when going through Denver; especially with a trailer.

Our Magellan GPS has a box that can be checked to avoid toll roads, which is nice if you don't want to deal with them. We were on a portion of E-470 a few years ago with our rig in tow, and only went about half way down to our destination on the east side of Denver. With the congestion where we were going, I was very happy to pay the toll instead of fighting the traffic.

Jim,

Don't disagree on toll roads but I believe a lot are in place as the only way to get them built. I have seen tolls go away but its rare. There is generally an option to go around the toll roads.

AZ,
Thanks for understanding. Sorry I had to vent on that subject. Excessive taxes really set me off.

I will have to say though that there is no reason they have to collect tolls to build a road and pay for it. They just elect not to use the taxes they already collect on something else! Tolls are a very inefficient way to pay for roadways anyway!
