Hooking BBQ to propane supply on 5th wheel

Last year, I had my dealer in Reno Nevada hook up a quick disconnect and a hose to hook up to my BBQ, so I would not have to use those little green propane bottles, and it did not work. It hardly kept half the burners lit, because I was told by this site that they put the gas supply before the regulator, and since the BBQ has a regulator, it was being regulated too much. So I told my dealer today, that when I take the 5th wheel in for my yearly service next week, that I want them to fix this, and she said that unfortunately the gas line has to go thru the 5th wheel regulator, and that I would have to find a non-regulated BBQ? I told her I did not think this was true, but thought I would ask all of you about this? If it is true, where do I find a non-regulated propane BBQ? Thanks

You can either remove the regulator from your grill, which will then not allow you to use it away from your RV, or you can get one of these: http://www.propaneproducts.com/all-m...nd-tee-97.html

Thanks, it does not look like I can disassemble the BBQ. The regulator looks like it is all one unit going to the burners? I will check out if the link you gave me can work on my rig.

Thanks again, Bob

You will need a tee at the propane tank. Here is the one I bought: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Or if you are handy at things ... T into the line off one bottle before your regulator and run a hard line down and out under the tanks with a quick disconnect like you have now. That way you don't have to open the tank door to access the hose. Use soapy water to check your handy work for leaks.

DG,

That's what I thought my RV dealer in Reno was going to do for me? Maybe it is a Montana insurance thing, but then why did they not tell me anything? I will show them Bob's T attachment thing, and see what they have to say about not letting me know before they charged me a few hundred bucks to add my quick disconnect setup?

What grill? There are many posts and stickies on how to modify grills. There is even a simple solution for Coleman, which many thought couldn't be modified.

Our grill has the regulator as part of what screws onto the little tank. I guess yours is different.

Sure ... many grills can be modified by removing the regulator, but then if you want to use it anywhere other than right next to your RV ... it isn't going to happen. The high pressure quick disconnect talked about here isn't that difficult to install.

I'm pretty sure I have the Weber Q2000 BBQ. I'm not near it now, but I remember seeing that the regulator was all part of the screw in assembly for the small green bottles of gas.

A quick internet search showed that you can unscrew the regulator on your Weber. Replace with the proper quick connectors and a hose of the length you need. If you need to use the regulator, remove the quick disconnect and replace the regulator, or put a quick connector on the regulator so you can easily switch back and forth.

My Cougar had the quick disconnect arrangement. I modified my Weber Q1000 ti use this setup by removing the regulator and adding the quick connect fitting. I also modified the original regulator with the appropriate quick connect fitting so I could still use it with 1lb propane bottles or a bulk tank hose.

The regulator on teh Weber grills is a threaded male as I recall. I have the best of both worlds. Now I need to install the quick connect on the Monty. On my honey do list.

If they charged you "a few hundred bucks" to add a quick disconnect you are using the WRONG DEALER!

They routed copper tubing from the main propane side underneath and put a permanent plug in fitting on the right side of the 5th wheel, and supplied a 15 foot hose with fittings on it. Without having my grill in front of me, I can't visualize if i will be able to take the regulator off of the BBQ or not. I hate using those little green gas cans. Maybe i will just bring along another 5 gallon tank with a hose I already have that goes to a Coleman stove? Not sure if the fitting is the same, but it must be, because it screws in to where those green cans go.

Todd727 ... your counterpoint is noted. Being older and not excited about swapping things each time the need arises ... my HP quick disconnect works best for us not only for the grill, but smoker, and propane yard light along with a camping buddies cooker. I didn't have to modify anything ... I just hook them to the hose that attaches to the quick disconnect beneath my side skirt.

The 5 gallon would work fine but I use a 1 gallon and it works good too without taking as much space and a fraction of the weight. Amazon.

No counterpoint, just options. Yours works too. I'm just pointing out how others have used the low pressure quick connects.

BTW, I didn't use the one on the Cougar and went with the splitter off of the tank with a long hose or a separate tank for the grill. My Monty doesn't have a low pressure hook up that I know of.

I bought a st stl grill, that does not have a regulator, and it is working great!! I did not know that when you go to camping world, or Sierra RV's on line store that you can buy non-regulated BBQ's. I checked for which one I liked, and then bought it on Amazon for less!!
