Any sugestions?

I need some ideas on how, and what would be a good way to do this job.
I have done a complete wash and wax of the Monty, I need some sugestions on what might be a good way to wash the rubber roof, without streaking the sides of the Monty from the harsh cleaner chemicals. I dont think Dawn Soap will get the roof clean enugh so a stronger detergent is needed, but that will attack the wax that was put on preavously.
any ideas other than wrapping the sides with painters drop cloth taped to the top channel of the exterour walls.

Thanks for any idea.

we use a heavy mix of dawn soap and a long handle brush. does a good job on roof. The DW uses a second hose to rinse the sides as I do the roof to keep it from drying on the sides

I just recently waxed my entire Monty, I did do the roof first however. Since you did not I would recommend using a dish washing detergent like dawn and a long handled brush, that cleaned everything except the most stubborn parts and when I did those area's I used lots of water and rinsed it well.

Reverse the process next time...

Don't use Dawn, it will take the wax off your sides. I'd use a very mild cleaner and lots of elbow grease.

Yea, Yea ,Yea, I know I should-a dune dat first. But the campground would have seen me up there doing something I wasn't supose to be doing in that RV park.
I guess the only thing going to see the roof is a plane or helocopter right now. LOL.

I thought Dawn was sorta mild and wouldn't take off all them little black dots on the rubber roof. I use it on my car and truck and the wax is still on them . but thanks for the worning.

racerjoe
That sounds like the way to do it. I like that idea and it should work good.

Use what you think will work, and get the wife to use a second hose to hit the sides of the camper as you clean the roof?

Just don't use a soap that smells like citrus. There have been reports of birds and squirrels damaging roofs that smelled like something to eat. May not be true, but why risk it.

Dawn, has great grease removing properties, and as such it will remove wax very quickly as well. If you don't want to remove the wax, stay away from anything with sodium alkyl sulfate or alcohol, Dawn has both.

On our Montana, we got way behind the curve on keeping the roof clean, about 3 years. We used dawn dishwashing liquid, knee pads and a strong bristle brush, lots of elbow grease, lots of water. The roof came out sparkling white without harm to the sides.

We do the roof with dawn twice a year. The old bucket and long handled brush method. Don't care if the roof is white who sees the roof. We have never waxed the Montana's. We will on occasion use the liquid car wash type wax on the camper and the truck. I should say Helen does the roof twice a year. I do not do roofs.

Owners manual says mild automotive soap and wax twice a year. Dawn is aggressive, have I used it on the roof of trailers? Yep but not the last two and we wonder why we have decal failure and other problems with Filon fade. We do use Dawn to clean wax off of cars before solvent wipe, before sanding, when prepping for paint. I think a good roof cleaner and conditioner designed for the membrane would work best.

I've never understood the obsession with cleaning the roof until it's spotless. They are made for the outdoors so I just go up with a bucket of carwash/wax mix and water and lightly brush the roof ever other year. Haven't had any problems and the only ones that see the roof are the birds. Do you wash the roof on your house?

Everybody will say NO WAY but me and my buddies we have used a pressure washer for the roof for 10 years works AWESOME Easy,Fast, the key is I only use a Electric 1800 P.S.I. pressure washer NOT a big gas 2500 +++ that will rip your skin off I got tired along time ago doing the messy chemical B.S. dripping all over the side and it took too long to do anyway It has NEVER hurt my roof or the Caulking and I do not wash the sides with it so it does not hurt the Graphics... O.K Everybody call me Crazy and it will void my Warranty Blah blah blah..but Hey it WORKS!!

Okay, I'll bite..."you are crazy" to use a pressure washer on any part of a Montana, or anything with graphics or sealed parts. You've been lucky so far...but that pressure washer will get something sooner or later, a graphic, a caulk seal, a silicone seal, a window seal, A/C seal...something.

I've used a pressure washer for about a year on my MH and toad without any problems.....My graphics on MH are painted, so, I'd have to agree to not use them on decals on the Montana.

10 years and 2 different 5th's with no problems is more than luck ,people think I'm using a big 2500,3500 gas power washer and I will Rip the rubber roof or Caulking off and it would, my little wimpy Home Depot electric 1800 P.s.i is just powerfull enough to get crud off the roof and it has never taken caulking off, seals or anything like that and like I said I never use it on windows, decals etc...I also use it to wash the undercarriage of my truck and scooters after a day at the beach clean my driveway and that is all they are good for

Heck, lets face it, with the quality of our Montana decals I'll bet if I even pulled up with a power washer in the bed of my truck more of my decals would start falling off at the sight of it!

LOL that's funny JandC ,mine would too but I keep safe distance and plus my wimpy power washer won't do them any harm (unless they are falling off already and I put the nozzle 1 inch away) then I would do them a favor and put them out of their Misery...Plus last time I checked there was not a single Graphic ON the roof
