Low Bridge POI File
Has anyone found a good comprehensive POI file for low overpasses/bridges? I haven't loaded any POI files yet onto my new Nuvi 680. However, this would be a good one to look at loading. Also, do most people use the .gpx or the .cvs file format? What speed for the proximity alert? Thanks in advance.

Ron, Maybe some one has a file as you requested, if not, here is a good web site:
http://www.aitaonline.com/Info/Road/...learances.html
I find by looking through the states I plan on driving through, there are very few under 13ft. So it may not be too big a job to input them.

We used the same web page AITAonline. I printed a copy and kept it in our Montana and now in our Motorhome. Our Montana was 13'4" with the satellite dome on top. I think it came to 45 pages for all of the states.

I have not loaded it on mine because I haven't yet studied it to figure out what conversions are necessary. Plus, I'm only somewhat familiar with the proximity alarms. OK, I'm on US 456 and will be crossing US 123. There is a low bridge on US 123 about a quarter mile from my intersection. I have the proximity alarm set for 1/2 mile. Remember, I'm on US 456, not 123 where the bridge is. Because I get within that 1/2 mile is the alarm going to go off even though I'm not on that highway? In other words, is the proximity alarm setting based on radius from the site or is it only if I'm on the road with the obstacle? I'm sure I'm showing my ignorance. I just haven't delved into this yet.

Bigmurf, you can't really attach it to a post. There are a couple of things you can do, though.
One is to put it on the internet somewhere, if you have webspace, then post the url here.
The other is to tell people to send you their email address and you'll send it to them. They can do that by clicking the envelope icon above your post to email you, telling you their email address.
Hope this helps.

If this is a Garmin compatible file, I would be interested in looking at it also.

Here is the POI for low bridge clearance as provide by bigmurf.
I'm hoping this link works. If anyone has a problem, let me know.
This link will provide you with a web page that you will be able to choose either TomTom or Garmin Low Bridge Clearance POI file. If you should be asked to open or save the file, save it - don't open it. Once it is saved you can open the zip file and read the text file for instructions.
TomTom/Garmin POI File
Garmin file now added. When it opens, do a "save as" to a CSV file format.

Works great! Thanks. Now I need to see if this is something I can use with my Garmin. I can do custom poi's, I'm just not sure what format and/or conversions I'll need. I'll dig out the manual.

Unfortunately, we Garmin guys would need to first convert the file to .csv format, a spreadsheet format, or the .gpx format. It's current file extension and format is .ov2, which is specific to Tom-Tom.
We also need to download the free POI Loader from Garmin, if you don't already have it. Here's some excerpts from the info page. Ron, this is your thread. If you'd prefer I start a new thread for this, just let me know.

mport customized points of interest created by others with the help of Garmin's new POI Loader software. In today's fast-paced world, points of interest are ever-changing. With the help of POI Loader, you can now add your favorite new restaurant, or that supermarket having the grand opening, as points of interest (POIs) to your compatible Garmin GPS. The possibilities are endless — upload safety cameras or school zones, and you will receive a warning if you are traveling too fast. In addition, an optional proximity-alert feature notifies you of upcoming custom POIs. Our free, new POI Loader software lets you personalize your GPS, giving you the freedom and flexibility to literally go anywhere.
As an added benefit to our customers, you can download the latest version of POI Loader software for free from our website.

--
What is POI Loader?
POI Loader is free software for your computer that lets you upload customized POIs to your compatible Garmin unit. POI Loader does not create customized POIs, nor is it software for your Garmin GPS. It simply gives you the ability to upload POIs created by others from your computer to your compatible Garmin — making it easy for you to navigate directly to these points of interest.
--
How Does POI Loader Work?
POI Loader must first be installed on your computer. After installation, search and navigate to personalized POIs on your computer, and use POI Loader to upload these points of interest from GPX or .CSV files to your compatible Garmin GPS or onto an SD card.
With POI Loader, you can configure your unit to alert you when you are within a certain distance of a point or if you are driving over a certain speed near a point — perfect to warn you about upcoming school zones, red lights, and speed cameras. For more information on POI Loader, see the help file that is included with the free software download.

Thanks to all for their help. Now this is useful information that will be used repeatedly. I believe it is factual, not opinion or advice, so I will accept it as truth. (Sorry, couldn't resist!!!!) I will be downloading or uploading today to the garmin to check it out.
