Battery change.

We just bought our first fifth wheel. A 2010 Mountaineer. Our rear stabilizers and radio don’t work. I’m guessing a common ground ? I had trouble also with the front landing gear wanting to work. I looked at the water in the batteries. Some cells were bone dry. I want to change the batteries. They are still factory. I thought I read in a forum you can’t simply change them or it can screw up the electrical. I can’t find that thread now. Is there something I need to do while changing them ?

On our 2010 we never did anything special when we replaced the batteries. On the rear stabilizer, it could be the motor. Many rigs of that age had the hole where the wires intered the motor open so water got in and the motor died. I carried a wrench that fit my drill that I could use to raise and lower the stabilizer if needed.

I didn’t do anything other than disconnect from power and throw the battery disconnect switch. I just took the old battery to NAPA and told them to give me an equivalent or better. Put it in. Switched battery disconnect back. Plugged back into power. And all was good.

Got you're PM, but for others who wonder, on mine the opposite end from the motor had a pin through the shaft that let you put a special chuck on it and turn it that way.

It appears the batteries are Marine deep cell. Is that what I want to replace them with ?

We have two RV/Marine maintenance free batteries and never have to check water level. We occasionally boondock, just not enough to need golf cart batteries.

Yes! Marine Deep Cycle You probably have a Group 24 I recommend slightly larger Group 27 Go to your favorite Auto Parts they can make recommendations of Deep Cycle batteries.

Just check your battery box for fit, as you decide.

Don't need to worry about the battery box if you buy sealed batteries.

Yes, you can. Battery requirements for the fifth wheel is only dependant upon your style of rv'ing. If you stay in rv parks all the time and plug into park power, then one battery is fine. If you want to camp with no shore power, then you will need an appropriate size generator and probably want a larger battery bank.
