difference between TT and Fiver

We currently own a TT that is 37' overall, (from hitch to bumper). We ordered the 3700LK that has a 40'6' overall length. I tow with a 3500 CC DRW Long bed, so my question is, how much different will it be from towing the TT to the fiver? How much of the fiver is actually over the bed, and how long is the actual living space being towed?

Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.

Having towed both, the tow difference is night and day. Fifth Wheel is stable, improved turn ratios, no sway bars, etc, easy to hook up, backup is a bit different, but simple to adjust to. Fifth wheel caps normally extend past the king pin, so just round living space to the length of the rig.

The big difference as mentioned is in stability when towing. When we went long time and knew we would be doing many, many miles we went to the 5th wheel. Before that we had TT's.

I agree with both previous replies ... once making the switch to a fiver ... you'll never go back to a bumper pull.

Its an easy adjustment. Sounds like your new rig will be shorter than your old one when you look at total length of truck and trailer. Biggest adjustment required is paying more attention to vertical clearance as you are likely a fair amount taller.

Make sure you get a good hitch and king pin. That will help a lot.

You will find due to the location of the pivot point the 5er tracks more to the inside of a turn than the TT. So you will need to swing a little wider to avoid jumping curbs. Or worse scraping a post or other object at the turn, or dropping the trailer wheels off a culvert.

One of my biggest fears is the tail swing on the fiver compared to the TT I have now, though it has a tail swing, not sure if it's evil as a fiver

We do "square turns" to avoid tail swing.

Just had that conversation on another forum when a Class A showed the results of tail swing. Several others chirped in they had done likewise. SSOOO ~~ here is a sticker I designed for any others that have joined the club but not yet got the sticker or admitted to the being a member.

You will appreciate the difference. You will notice that while backing the timing for correcting is different. While going forward there is now sway and while passing truckers on the highway it doesn't affect me at all.

Captn, can I join your club? Took out a rear side window on a unit that was only a couple of months old. Just a dumb mistake and not checking the mirrors.

Mine came from a vinyl fence post too. It was dark and an employee jumped in a golf cart and said follow me. He took a sort cut and the 5er tail caught the post ~~ actually took out 2 of them. In daylight I never would have tried that. I smiled when he came back in the am to reset the posts, new holes and all. Still my fault. Should have spent the night in a rest area instead of coming in after dark. About $2100 damage and paid out of pocket ~~ that will help me always remember to watch the tail

You are welcome to join. I just designed the sticker. I'll say the guy with the big new Class A that took out the mirror on a firetruck and had the truck tire do a lot more damage started the club,,, found there are many members ~~ though some don't / won't talk about it.

I think you will be way happier dragging a Fifthwheel. I agree with Zack on the overall difference in hight. In towing either rig you have to remember that you are towing and the trailer tracks differently than the TV. I have seen way more TT's involved in wrecks than Fifthwheels, some due to wind and others due to not setting up the weight distribution bars properly etc. Stability is way better in my opinion and usually more storage. Most newer Fifthwheels have an extended hitch compared to older units being basicly verticle. With the extended hitch you have a lot less of the unit over the back of your truck. I am sure you will be happy after a short period of time getting used to your new unit.

Earned my sticker last June pulling out of storage trying to avoid a MH crowding over into my slot. Caught the curb side rear cap on a steel column to the tune of $12,000+. Fortunately only cost me $500 deductible.

What is a "square turn", and how does that avoid tail swing if you're doing a 90 turn?
