Bottle Jack

What size/type of jack are you all using to lift an axle to change a wheel if needed? Just looking for suggestions and ideas. Thanks in advance!

Mine is either a 3 or 4 ton can’t remember which. Even a 3 ton will lift more than any wheel on a camper. It fits in about a 5 x 8 inch box. I think perfect.

I carry a 6 ton and a 12 ton bottle jack with me. My truck came with a 4 ton bottle jack from factory. The 12 ton was what I had when I was trucking so I figure why not put it in the trailer. Trailer also has level up which also could be used.

I carry a 5 ton plenty of jack & it fits in a small space!

Mine is a 4 ton. No wheel is going to have even 2 tons sitting on it so 4 ton has plenty of safety margin.

Carry two 12 tons with us.

I carry a 6 and a 4 ton ... no need for anything more unless you already have say a 12 ton. Like Bill said, there's not going to be much more than 2600# - 2800# on any one wheel if you jack right under the axle between the U Bolts.

Carry a 12 ton bottle jack, but never use it to change a tire or do maintenance on the bearings or brakes. The last time I did use it was to replace the MORryde rubber suspension blocks between the springs. I also carry a Safe Jack kit with an adapter to use with my 12 ton jack for use with whatever else might need jacking, truck or other vehicles. I carry a 12 ton jack. I've never used it. I use the leveling system to lift entire trailer to change tires or grease wheel bearings.

I carry in the bed of the truck 1 sheet of ¾ plywood cut into quarters 8 4X4X30 inch wood blocks and under the back seat 2 bottle jacks one 3 ton and one 20 ton.

I have been stuck 3 times in commercial RV parks and I don’t allow anyone to tow any of my vehicles out of soft ground. I jack and track them out.

I carry a low version 12T jack. Way overkill but I have a couple so it became a part of the 'standard' maintenance tools I carry. As a note, I carry enough blocking since we don't have self leveling that it's even easier to just drive one wheel up on 2 or 3 of those boards. The other wheel then comes off the ground and is a bunch cleaner and safer then a jack under the spring plate. If you are doing wheel bearings - what's a little dirt in that grand scheme

I have a curiosity question for you as well as others that use the self leveling.

You have a flat tire which means you have to stop alongside the highway. The shoulder is not a good surface and will be for miles. How do you use that leveling system ? Can you raise one side? Wouldn't you be batter off with a plank leveled out and a bottle jack to safely raise your $$ 5er

I haven't been faced with that yet but should be able to place boards under the pads in the front and rear of the affected tire just as one would the bottle jack. Yes you can raise just one side.

But if our next last 5er has self leveling, I'll probably still choose a jack and or stacked boards for side of road tire changes. Tough to change an OFs ways

If my level up wont do it for some reason, i use the one that came with the 450, cant imagine needing more than one jack, as with others i have plenty of plastic planks and boards for the landing gear, even with the level up, some campgounds wont let your metal pads hit the black top?

In 'Manual' mode, the system can raise one side or the other and unless you were stopped on a sandy shoulder, will work just fine. Bad location, just drive slowly until you get to a safe location. The tire is probably trash anyway.

We can’t use the Level-Up system because the front hydraulic cylinders will not raise the trailer enough to move the steam engine from the truck to the trailer or the reverse.
