Jacking up one side..

I just bought 2008 2955 rl. I plan to lift one side at a time in order to repack bearings, adjust brakes and service suspension as needed. Where/how should I lift the rig. I keep reading that you need to be careful where placing jacks and jack stands.

I used two Hyd jacks right under the U\Bolts for the axles when I did mine and no problems did one side and then the other. I did put down my leveling jacks just to be safe!

I went ahead and used two jacks on the axels between bolts and wheel. I jacked a little at a time on each inorder to distribute the weight. Then I lowered onto jack stands while keeping some of the load on the jacks. Stands were just to the other side of the bolts.

So....question: if all of us DYIers where to take our rigs to a dealer or CW or however how would they be lifting in order to work on bearings or brakes or....?
Also how do the roadside service people lift to change a tire. Are they all as obsessive about lifting these rigs as we all seem to be??

I had a flat during a trip. Called my road service company. They used an air powered jack placed between the u bolts. That's also the spot I use when I have jacked up rig.

Anywhere close to the u bolts will be ok. I would also do as mentioned and put jack stands under the axle close to the u bolts. If you are going to be removing the wheels than I recommend jack stands under the frame also.

Of coarse if you have level up, just use that to get it off the ground.

Just do one wheel at a time. That way you dont really need jack stands.

IMHO you ALWAYS need jack stands. Some months ago a friend of mine (A heavy equipment mechanic all his life 40+ years) used a fork lift to lift the rear of his truck off the ground to check the rear brakes. The truck rolled forward and dropped off the fork's while he was doing so and landed on him crushing his ankle +.

Its just not worth the chance.

Not too sure there are many of us that carry a full set of jack stands with us while traveling. If the rig does not have the leveling system to use to lift the rig, first, make sure the opposite side of the rig is fully chocked to prevent it from moving. When lifting to change a tire on the road, there would be no reason to get under the rig, so even if a jack were to fail, there should be no injuries if one is paying attention.

When doing one wheel at a time than there is always one wheel on the ground. If worried just hook up the truck and then the 5er will not move.

I had a "U" shaped saddle made by a metal fab shop. The vertical reaches of the saddle rest under each side of the shortest leaf in the spring pack. A bottle jack under the saddle allows me to lift one wheel at a time and I don't have to worry about the Monty rolling. Dexter says NEVER place a jack on any part of the axle tube. When I described my saddle design, Dexter said that was a safe solution. The saddle and the bottle jack don't weigh much so I can take them on the road with me in case of a flat.
