Marathon blow out
Thought I'd share a couple of photos of the tire blowout Gail and I had on our way home from Florida last month. We've heard a lot about Goodyear Marathons and how they're susceptible to blow outs. Without warning, ours blew on I-85 just before exit 20 in Virginia. Here's a photo.

I was doing 60mph, weather was cool, no real reason I could see for this to blow.
Here's another pic.
[IM]http://i47.tinypic.com/20iwc49.jpg[/IMG] Your pics are much too large. Please review the MOC Policy regarding picture size and posting. Please note folks can still click on the link to view the picture. Thank you. RVWheels, MOC Admin.
These tires had less than 5k miles on them. Take notice of the tread on the good tire in the pics. All tires were new when we bought the 5ver.
We're in the process of negotiating with Goodyear for some kind of rebate on an upgrade to G614s. I'll let you know how that goes.

I am sorry for your problem. Doesn't look good at all. At least you are okay.
When will Goodyear or Keystone do something about those @&$&! Tires!

Don't know about Keystone doing anything..... I have not contacted them about this.
The local Goodyear tire dealer is negotiating with Goodyear at this writing. I'm told it
will probably take a week or so to settle.

Sorry you had the problem. Those are tires that should not be on rigs of our weight and probably not on any rigs.

I will bet that Keystone might offer the G614's as a option if you requested it. They are OEM on the big sky so they are at the factory. My guess is that the G614's would be cost prohibitive to the average Rv'er.

That's the reason I had those pieces of junk removed and my BFG Commercial TAs installed on our new rig before it left the lot.

One more example of Keystone's head in the sand re Goodyear Marathons. Just how many blowouts will it take before they change out those tires and go with a decent tire.

Marathons are a ticking time bomb. Not a matter of if, but when. Even if you never moved the rig they would likely explode at some point sitting still.

I have the same model and year, luckily I was on the MOC before I bought and knew the problems with the Marathons and put G614's on before our first trip. Best decision I have made for the Monty.

It's only cost prohibitive it you don't know what the Marathons are going to cost you in the end.

Wow, that sucks!
I'm now hearing stories that people have been seeing TV transporters towing potential customer trailers (Montana included) at up to 75 mph or higher to get them to the dealer for sale (if you drive fast enough these workers can get more jobs and pay - what do they care about other customer's products). In Keystone's case there are only two factories (one in Indiana and the other is in Oregon) and this means some of them are towed or transferred to dealerships with four-on-the-floor (not carried by a heavy duty transporter or by train).
These speeds are far too fast (speed rating is 65mph max) and I wonder if a trailer tire tread were to blow off like that is because when exceeding the speed rating of these tires this could be weakening them for unsuspecting customers.
I baby my Marathons a lot and check them very often. But I got my Marathons off a tire dealer's supply and they've never been driven over 65mph. Okay, maybe once or twice on a downhill the speed creeped up towards 70 mph, but I notice quickly and slow down. Now I'm approaching 5 years on the DOT code and I hope they make it that long.

While it pained me to drop over $1000 to replace the Marabombs, seeing these pics just validates that it was the right decision. Glad you're OK.
Please keep us posted on the outcome with Goodyear.

Pretty scarry pic! You mentioned your speed was within accepted norm...do you know what the psi on the tire was at??? No finger pointing here...just continuing to try to understand how so many people continue to ride on these tires without mishap while others suffer such horrible results like yours?????

I think the option should be there for the Buyer to decide. I am sure Keystone gets a great deal on the volume purchase of G614's since they are installing them on the Big Sky's.

Thought I'd update this thread. I heard from Kim at Goodyear corporate. At first she offered me Marathon replacements at %25 percent of retail. After reviewing the blow out and the damage to the 5th wheel, she increased it to 20%. Bottom line, the discount is being applied against upgrading to the G614's. The local dealer is going to install 5 G614s for $230.14 each. I checked with Tredit and they said the rims will take the 3750 lbs the G614's require. The tires are on order and should be in by Tuesday of next week. I highly recommend anyone with Marathons to change them out before it's too late. I also ordered the TST tire pressure monitoring system with 8 sensors, ($399.00) 4 for the 5th wheel and 4 for the tow vehicle. I figure this should do it. Thanks exnavydiver for the heads up on the TST monitoring system. That's it. Happy traveling everyone. Thanks for all the kind replies to this thread. Lou A

Sounds like a good plan! I'm sure you'll feel better with your new setup.

Would you purchase the tires at a Tire dealer or the RV dealer and would they install the TST.

Quote 'The local dealer is going to install 5 G614s for $230.14 each.'. Wow what a good price. I just installed the G614's at $333 + Tax + $29.00 each to install. The TST system I installed myself. It is not that difficult to program.

Meanwhile we had two sets of the marathons on our much lighter previous TT with not a singe issue. They were also on the TT previous to that. All lighter RV's.
Having had some experience in selling rv's a few $$ does make a big difference to the average buyer who is BTW not very knowledgeable of the product they are buying..
When faced with a extra 1000/14000 $$ or more f or a set of G6-14's the unknowledgeable buyer will not pay the $$$
Also if you go to some other forums you will note that the G6 14"s are failing on much heavier rv's. (Escapees, RV net)
