We are new at 5th wheeling. Plan to get a Montana 3121RL. Just have to figure out what truck to get.....lots of options.......need a SRW diesel just don't know about Chevy, Ford or Ram........thanks in advance for any suggestions/comments.........keep the rubber side down!..........................................Die sel

Ron-- Boy did you open a can of worms on this post. Everyone has their own opinion on the best truck to pull their unit and whether it should be a dually or a SRW unit. The best advise I can give you is to go to all four of the big name manufacturers( Chevy, GMC, Ford or Dodge) and sit in them and drive them. Then think about which one feels best to you to be driving and towing with. Then go back and drive the units again and see if there is everything you like about any specific one that would make you feel at home and at ease while driving and towing with it. One thing to remember is when you need power for towing ,such as in the mountains and etc, and you don't have it, it is to late to try and upgrade. Get a truck that you know you will have plenty of power for any situation when needed. I prefer a four wheel drive but that is me. I may never need it but if I do, I have it to get myself out of a problem situation.
Oh, don't let a dealer/salesman tell you " Oh ya, that truck will pull anything you put behind it!" Don't fall for that they are not the one that is towing and have that 32-42 foot camper behind them, you are and you want to be as safe as possible with towing and stopping that unit as you can.

Depending on what you intend to do you'll have to be careful in your choice and remember, no matter what your truck says it can tow a SRW is limited by the weight a single tire can carry and the manufacturers don't always take that into account. You can guess how I know. That said our SRW and DRW were both Dodges and we've towed heavy rigs alll over for about 90,000 miles now and wouldn't change. That should to start it:

Yes this is going to get a lot of comments. I started with a 2007 SRW 2500 Diesel short box Chevy and it was doing it OK but was a bit overweight for the 15,000 Lb. 5th wheel we had at the time then we moved up to a 2015 DRW Ford diesel and a new to us 2017 381TH and it handles both campers better and we like this set up.

Looking at the Montana 3121RL out the door around 12,000lbs. The Ram 3500 SRW should do the trick with the diesel? Kinda heading in that direction.....thanks for all the comments, appreciate it.....you guys have been there, done that......................................Diesel

Welcome to the forum. It will be interesting on what you finally go with.I'm not an expert by any mean but I do know that you don't go with the dry weight you go by the GVWR, 16,380.

Definitely get 4 wheel drive. You will appreciate it the first time you have to switch in a campground that is up hill or muddy.

Well GA, watch that yellow sticker. My new 5er ihas a gvwr of 16,800. I'm figuring 3200 on the 220# hitch. Sticker says 3447 so a dually was ordered. With me, wife, dog, and travel cooler I'd be about 800-900# over. Did it handle the 1st 900 miles well, yes but not fully loaded yet either. Sadly will be giving up my 2016 F350 srw.

I agree with Rondo. Don’t make a mistake getting the second best truck for you. You will never know which is the best truck for you if you don’t drive all three and really compare them. Every body needs and wonts something different so don’t let someone talk you into the truck that is second best.

350/3500 is best for your trailer. Diesel is great but $8,000 more (at least) and diesel fuel is usually $0.40 to $0.50 a gallon more. Trucker tax.

There are many opinions on manufacturer, model 250/350/2500/3500 and SRW/DRW. I went with DRW just to be safe and haven't regretted it. Take it through Starbucks drive through s with no issues. Still kick myself for not taking a picture when I backed it in between two Prius's.

Welcome from another GA Boy. Rondo said it best, drive then all and find what suits you best. That said I have pulled 5th wheels and goose neck RV's, horse and cattle trailers for a long time. I have a 2000 F350 dully with the 7.3 diesel and only a few performance modification and I love my truck. The only thing missing that I wish I had is engine brakes, to that end I am having disc brakes installed on my RV at the rally this fall.
