Wink Adding a hitch to Montana

What ideas do you all have for adding a hitch to pull small boat trailer to a 2014 Montana ,with a wrapped up underbelly?

I took mine to a shop that deals only in hitches and they welded a tube from frame I-beam to I-beam. Then they reinforced the frame making it stronger. It looks good and I'm happy with the way it was done.

A very broad question. People have different ideas about big & small. You say "pull a small boat trailer" but will a boat be on the trailer?

I put this on my last camper . Simple bolt on, did the job. Can be had for about half that price with research.

I have the molded rear cap. I welded up a hitch to tow my little squirt boat. I bolted it to the frame with six 1/2" bolts. The boat and trailer weighs in right at 2000#. You'll get a lot of pushback from most of the full timers on the MOC about rear hitches. I've put one on all 3 of my Montana's without issue pulling either 2 jetskis or my current squirt boat. I've been with the MOC a long time and have never read an article about frame issues directly attributed to a rear hitch setup. Here's a photo. The gusseted post on the hitch is a bicycle rack.

This is the one I put on my last 5th wheel (SOB). It is adjustable in width. I bolted and welded it. Also put skid wheels on it. When I get motivated, I'll do the same for the Montana.

This is what I did on ours. To date, I've only pulled a trailer with two barrels of water-about 1,700 lbs.

My initial plan was to tow my jeep. I have not got up the nerve to do it yet, except around the block; maybe never will. The jeep weighs a lot more than the 3500lb GVWR limit of the hitch.

We have always been told that if the Montana came with a hitch, fine. If it did not come with a hitch, you will probably void the frame warranty by attaching your own. Just saying.

Our current unit has the basement garage so we don't need a hitch. But on our previous Mountaineer I had 4" Square tubing welded between the frame members and 3 separate receivers (one in center and one on either side about 1' in from trailer side) off of that facing the rear. I then welded up three hitch sized square tubing members with a piece of channel iron on top. I used that for a 250 Kawasaki trail bike. I towed doubles many times with my 15' aluminum flat bottom (jon boat) and 25 hp motor. I also towed doubles with another boat trailer that I had loaded with my kayaks and our Honda 1100cc cruiser. Never had any kind of issue with the frame as a result. BUT I would have never towed my big fiberglass Champion bass boat or put the Honda cruiser up on the rack!!!

You also have to watch your overall length AND the state laws about towing doubles. In Arkansas and many other states your overall length is limited to 65'. I literally had to drop the 25hp motor down to clear that. It is legal in some states to tow doubles but there are a LOT of states that don't allow it. Woodall's reference book has a section that covers that sort of stuff and I am sure you could look it up online as well. What I discovered is that generally the further West you go the more relaxed the laws are until you get to California that is. I get the idea that the environmentalists in California are not to keen on anything more than tents for camping......
