ACTUAL CASH

During other short time travels we have come across situations where estabishments do not take credit cards, but only cash.
What would be a good safe amount of actual cash to keep on hand when traveling on these long term trips (6 months to a year)? I know we don't need to carry cash for the entire time out there because we can stop at banks & Walmarts, etc to get more.
$500, $1,000, $2,000 or what. Just need a general idea.
Thanks Larry P

Larry, it's what you feel comfortable with. I would like to have at least a grand where I, or the parole officer could get her hands on it in an emergency.

We have been known to use less than $500.00 cash in 5 months on the road.

Gotta say, we must not be living right??

$100 is more then enough to have in your wallet as long as you have a debit card or going to a casino..

I like to have enough cash in my pocket to cover what I'm charging within reason just in case the card doesn't go through. Mostly groceries, campground fees, eating out, etc. I have been caught on several ocassions where my banks computers were down. Not good after you finished a meal in a restaurant.

We have never used an ATM, so our cash availability is limited. Just didn't want to be able to go to the cash machine.
When we visit different states, often our bank is AWOL...

In most states we are able to get $60.00 cash back on our Discover card when purchasing something in Walleyworld (other stores may do the same, not sure).

This did not work, however, when we were in New Mexico. Lucked out, our Bank had a branch in Las Cruces.

It is likely that at some time this master plan will blow up in our faces. Knockin on the wooden noggin, so far, so good, with that one stated exception.

We carry enough to get by on a normal travel day. Tank of fuel, two good meals for two and a campground be different forfee. This amount would be depended on the tow vehicle and your appetite.

In over 6 years of Long timing we have never had a place that only took cash..You can get cash at any big box and even family dollar stores.
100.00 cash can last me several weeks. We live in a near cashless society. I say 100.00 would be plenty.

We carry $200.00 also. Very rarely use cash except when we are buying some small item.

Just to throw a different curve, there is a Travel Park in Holiday Florida that does not take Credit, but will gladly accept cash or a personal check for $200.00 for a week with full hook=ups. Go figure.

We find that we need very little cash, some campgrounds take only cash or check but we have never found one that takes only cash. We will get about $100 from Wally World when we use our debit card, don't ask for $100 because the clerk will give you a $100 bill and who wants one of those? Some souveneir stores will only take cash if you are buying only a small amount

I think it's a personal preference. If you have access to a bank or other means of replentishing your cash, then having a small amt. is probably the way to go till you need some more. If I run out, I just ask the DW for some more.

I usually carry $200.00, and replenish from time to time at an ATM. I have yet to run across a big ticket item that I couldn't buy with a credit card. That said, if I were going to be out for a long time, I'd squirrel away $500.00 or so in addition. Never know when you may run into a good garage sale!

Lucky you, we don't have any extra room for a garage or a yard.

We are like most and only carry up to $200. Mike & Kat, and Mark & Karen are way too rich for me and I'm envious. Any more spending than that and I'd like the "safety" of a credit card for the purchase. Yeah, I know, credit cards don't work so well at garage sales unless you are buying the actual garage.
