On Edit: I also noticed that Harbor Freight has a similar model equipped with a winch mechanism. Of course it is about twice the price.

Bingo, I know its a bit more but what about an engine hoist. It will lift it out and roll it into the garage where you want it. Sit it on the floor or dollie. It will also lift the genset for you, plus you don't have to mount it in the truck. The have 2-3 diffrent sizes at Harbor Frieght.

In a previous post Will also mentioned an engine hoist and that is what I had originally looked for. I can see the merits of it, (wonder if DW would acknowledge the need for both???), but I can also see the merits of the crane. The crane is way cheaper than the engine lifts as well. The biggest deciding factor for me, is I really don't have the room in the garage for anything else.

Bingo,
I have used engine puller for the last 3 years to put generator in and out of truck as well as hitch.

When I need to take it out of truck I leave it connected to 5th wheel and pick it out with camper jacks and let it hang there.

I understand about leaving the hitch on the rig, but in my case that is impractical since the rig stays in mini-storage 15 minutes from the house.

Bingo,
That looks like a "cranial" idea.
Lookin' at the picture, and reading the manual, I think that the 7-1/2 inch chain could be replaced with a longer chain that would allow you to just lift the hitch a few inches off the bed of the truck, swing it around, and lower it to your dolly. You could adjust the chain to suit your needs as to how far down you need to go. A 55 gallon drum would use a shorter length chain before the bottom hits the ground.
Just thinking out loud. I'm still attending the SOHK. (School Of Hard Knocks)

That is more or less what I was thinking Wayne. Hard Knocks must run in common (daggone slide-outs anyway!!!). I am thinking I will go the crane route since it seems to fit the need I have!! Lots of good suggestions here as well!

I think I have it figured out completely now. The truck crane in conjunction with a 1000 pound movers dolly will do what I need and let me move the hitch around when I need to. The dolly can be supplemented with a swivel handle. Here are links:
Movers Dolly
Dolly Handle
I can put a fitted piece of 3/4" plywood on the dolly and I think (hopefully) that I will never have to manually lift or move the hitch again.

Bingo:
You have a lot of good suggestions here, but I have a question.. How do you lift the crane up into the pickup to put it in the stock rack hole on the box side? Isn't it a little heavy? Only a thought. My brother-in-law has one of these on his pick-up to lift barrels. He likes it and it works for him. He mounted it perminant.
I myself have all kinds of ways to get mine out of my truck. Manually (back breaker), engine hoist in shop, uni-loader, & tractor loader....JB

JB,
I thought about that as well, from what I read the entire assembly including the base weighs 60 or so pounds (the shipping weight is 62 pounds). Now provided that I decide not to leave it in the bed, (it lays over the wheel well below the bed rails), the extension part of the boom with the chain can be removed (it is manually extend-able)and the base would remain in the truck. I believe this would reduce the weight of the main bottom portion to less than 50 pounds which I can handle. That is a heck of a lot better than the 150 pound generator and the 100 or so pound hitch. One thing I was reading is that they recommend removal due to rusting (typical Chinese quality!!), so I was thinking of fashioning some kind of slip cover for the whole thing for when it is left in the truck. I guess I will know more in a couple of weeks.
