Kidde Fire Extinguisher Recall

I just received notice in the mail that Kidde is recalling some of it's plastic handle fire extinguishers: The recall involves 134 models of Kidde fire extinguishers manufactured between January 1, 1973 and August 15, 2017, including models that were previously recalled in March 2009 and February 2015. The extinguishers were sold in red, white and silver, and are either ABC- or BC-rated.
I had 2 of the recalled extinguishers on my RV.
Here a link to Kidde website for information on the recall:

Go to the link and fill out the form...very easy. To fill out the form, you will need ALL the data on the fire extinguisher...model number, serial number and date of manufacture.

Or better yet...Spend a few extra dollars and get the extinguisher with the metal head. They are a lot better quality and will work every time and can easily be recharged and placed back in service after use. The ones with the plastic head are junk and will not always work when needed. We saw a lot of them come through our station before I retired as a Firefighter. We always advised everyone who had one of the plastic ones to get rid of it and buy the better metal head ones. The plastic head ones can not be recharged either.

I think these are similar to the ones that Mac McCoy (mac@macthefireguy.com) sells.
I saw him do a demo at a rally in Quartzite.

I want to let everyone know I just received my 2 replacement fire extinguishers from Kidde. They did it right. They didn't send me the same cheap plastic handle ones like the last time. This time they upgraded my fire extinguishers. They sent me 2 of the Pro 110 models. These are the rechargeable ones with the metal handles and heads. I guess these are the ones PackerFan was talking about. So if you have the recalled ones and send them back they will be sending you the Pro 110 models.

I received an email last week that mine were on back order as they had an “unexpected “ demand for replacements. JT.

How can the demand for replacements be "unexpected"? They issued the recall! What where they think when they issued the recall? That people were just going to say nah it's ok I'll just keep my defective ones and not request replacement?

I have had to use portable fire extinguishers more than once in the oilfield and we train annually with them. I can say one thing for sure, 5lb. extinguishers don't last very long at all. I would not count on them to put much of a fire out.

Packer Fan, What do you advise for fire ext. size in our campers? Maybe in the TV as well? Oh and while at it, thanks for your service. My brother in law was a fireman in South Arkansas and safety supervisor at a refinery after that. Much respect for what yall do!

This is the fire extinguisher I have in my TV. They make a special mount to mount it to the bottom front of the drivers seat. That is where mine is mounted.

Good. I guess they must be discontinuing the plastic handle ones. This is the second time Kidde had to replace mine. They had the exact same recall a couple of years ago.
