We stayed at Laramie instead of Cheyenne this summer. I decided to stay there because it was closer to a couple of scenic roads (Snowy Mountains is one - much snow on ground early June). So if you aren't tied in to Cheyenne, you could try it. We were at the KOA. Pretty large flat sites with cable and wifi if that appeals to you.
I Casper we stayed at KOA again. I think it was because it was rated about equal to others with same amenities (and we get our KOA points :-) )
The KOA is about a mile from a very new National Trails Interpretive Center. There are about 4-6 old trails that came thru Casper. i.e. Oregon Trail, etc It was very impressive. Probably aimed a little bit more to kids with interactive wagons crossing a river, pull carts used by Mormons, etc. But tells a good story of those times.
Also, I think Casper is the town with a mountain near that you can drive up and look around. A ski lodge at the very top but they were running pipes and you couldn't get close enough to the edge of mountain to get a good view. A little lower on the mt. was a better viewing point.
