I have changed my email address and the site doesn't like me doing that for some reason.

I believe you need to do that via a moderator or administrator.

Go to Private Messages, at the top of this page, click.

There is a spot to notify moderators on that new screen, click the little box. proceed to write message

tell them OLD and NEW

You should be able to change your email address yourself. I have done it several times now. Of course it has been over a year so something might have changed.

can you be more specific. Error message or any failure symptoms would be helpful.

An Administrator or Moderator should not be necessary to change your e-mail address. The most common mistake is not scrolling down and hitting the "Submit" button. This should generate an e-mail to your new e-mail address with instructions.
