I agree that if fuel and def contamination is such a major problem shouldn't manufacturers put locking fuel doors on their trucks?

Have never had an issue with fuel contamination nor do I personally know anyone that has. This thread started with a friend had this problem vice a first hand observation and no info on what type of contamination. Seems like we are making a mountain out of a molehill. A lot of us have tens and hundreds of thousands of miles on our engines without issue.

We never thought about a locking fuel cap.We have never known anyone who had fuel contamination gas or diesel except hearing about it on forums.

I’ve heard of it over on a Ford Diesel site. It’s something we need to be concerned about. I seen several people crying because they ruined their high pressure fuel pump only to have Ford or their ESP deny their claim. “Abuse sorry”. It normally comes from a filling station.

If the tank is not locked how do we know where the contamination came from?

It’s in the fuel when you buy it. Dirty tanks, leaking water in the tanks, rust.
The best insurance is to buy fuel where a lot of fuel is sold and avoid little back woods stations. Dirty fuel WILL stop your new diesel truck and cost you thousands. You don’t wont to go there.

Hi

Bad99ram hasn’t given enough information for any of us to try to help.

I am in the process of cleaning out 2 diesel fuel system at this time both the result of water contamination that wasn’t properly addressed at the time.

The only time I have heard of the $6 to 10,000 figures was when DEF was introduced to the diesel tank.

This twice on the Ford pickups if taken to a Ford dealer their training is to replace all fuel system components in the DEF event but not for water.

Last but not least if you get the water indication on your instrument panel DONOT continue to operate the truck pull off the road and shut it down and don’t start it again until you have drained your water separator.

Phil

I did message him and asked the question. His reply was that the garage told him it was contaminated but he doesn't know with what

All of these high pressure common rail were developed by Bosch. They are all made my Bosch for Cummings, Ford and GM. No auto company makes their own. They all have the same problems and benefits. Dirt or water in them will destroy them in short order. Like Phil said if the water in fuel light comes on shut your truck off and coast over to the side of the road and get the water out of the system and if you can’t have it towed in.
I was told by the diesel tech at my Ford dealer if one of these systems goes bad Ford requires pictures of the inside of the HPFP. If there is any evidence of rust or dirt they will not warranty it. The cost is about $8000 or more.
BE CAREFUL!

Have your friend contact his insurance company. A similar thing happened to me and the best advice I received was to do the same. Most insurance companies will cover this under your comprehensive portion. Good for me was that mine did and it cost me $500 for the repair cost of $11,000.

Don’t take offense now that we know you don’t know we will wait and see what the owner can find out.

Lynwood

I cleaned the water out of a 2005 Duramax a couple of months ago it was pumped thru the system to the point it was in the fuel return lines.

I put a pump on the line at the tank and pumped diesel at about 50 PSI and bled the water out of all of the injection lines without removing the injectors.

I removed the fuel tank and cleaned it out.

I only changed the fuel filter and the FICM. I am sure the FICM failure wasn’t related to the water contamination.

They have been running it dally without a problem but I am waiting I am sure something will crop up in the future.

I now have 2 more but they are not the common rail they are older not so much trouble. LOL

Phil I just told you what Ford says. Since all all of these pumps are made my Bosch there is no difference in their performance.

I hate to admit this, but probably a few times I have put the funnel in the main diesel tank while I am undoing the cap to the Blue DEF, and then look and go holy s--t and switch the funnel before I pour? It's just that you are always putting diesel fuel in, and hardly the DEF, so you always are pulling the diesel plug out and it almost becomes habit?? So far i have not poured yet! :-)

Having the DEF filler under the hood may be a PITA, but I don't worry about putting DEF in the Fuel or Fuel in the DEF.

Just letting you know I am about to find out how hardy these new injection systems are. The 2005 has a different pump arrangement than the 2009 like I drive.

Time will tell if the water has damaged the pump or the injectors.

I also cleaned a Silverado gas engine that had water in it about 6 months ago didn’t change any parts on that one and it is still running. But time will tell on that one also.

Both the 2005 Duramax and the gas engine had sat for over a week before I got to them.

Both of these were out of town on farm land and very low fuel and the owners fueled them from 5 gallon gas can and both had more than half water in the cans.

My recommendation is if you think you are too low on fuel and have to use a gas can go purchase a new gas can and then dispose of it. LOL
