Have question about hooking up to generator
We will be using a friends generator to dry camp at the first of May. Do we have to have anything special to hook up to the generator? Should be worried about anything while hooked up to it? Any tips, suggestions etc would be helpful. We are not generator prepped, and own the 3400RL.
Thanks,
Colleen

Try this;
1) Manage your power usage when generator is on...window device use
2) Monitor your battery health when generator is off...be aware so vital devices can run
3) Consider using battery or oil lighting...minimize number and duration of Monty dc light use
4) Have FUN roughing it in style!!

Dry camping with a generator is a lot of fun. It would help if you stated the brand, size and what you hope to do with it. For example, we have the Honda 2000. Great little generator, but when we camp at altitude in the mountains of Colorado, it's limited to running TV, coffeemaker, lights, etc. No microwave or A/C. A 3500 or 4000 watt will handle those chores, provided you're not at altitude. You lose 10% of the rated capacity for every 10,000 feet of altitude above 5,000 feet. Also, what outlets are on the generator. The 2000 requires us to go down to a standard 110 v plug by using adapters. The larger generators usually have a 30 amp outlet - so if you have a 50 amp cord, you would need an 50 amp to 30 amp adapter. Hope this helped. Good luck.

I am not sure what brand generator it is, but I think he has a 5500 and a 6500. He uses them in his construction business. He told us that he has run two RV's off one of the generators.
We don't have a surge protector on our RV. Is one necessary when you are hooked up the a generator?
Thanks again guys for all your info. I love my princess camping It is always a learning expierence..... how many electric heaters can you run without popping a breaker....can you have the coffee pot on and the hair dryer....etc.

Construction generators and I'm starting to think about noise. Hope you can stand it and the neighbours if they are close.

Jim,
We will be in Llano Texas in the middle of a ranch at a HOG rally. We don't own a motorcyle, but heard this is a fun weekend. It is close to home and should be interesting to see all the people.
Not sure the generator will be much louder than hundreds of Harleys etc firing up. This may be my one and only rally!!

Driftwoodgal -
The size of generators you're talking about will run everything. Now, the noise is another issue. Most campgrounds have a curfew and a noise limit. Construction generators are not usually the quietest. But, it is a private ranch, so you will probably be okay. However, be sure to keep it locked up when you're not around. Generators are a hot commodity for theft.

Watch for a Harley with a trailer on the back of it. Keep you eyes on them. They would be the ones that would haul it off.
Just kidding. Y'all have a great time. Weather should be good.

Wayne,
I am worried about me having to hit my husband upside the head a 100 times a day because he is looking at the girls in those cute little tops. I was hoping the weather is cold so they will have to cover up
everything Good thing I know all he will do is look...hee hee

Colleen,
Just remember one thing about all husbands.
We promised to love, honor, and cherish. We never said a darn thing about going blind!!!
Edited: Yup! DH is hoping the weather is cold also!!!
Look for the painted on tops. The artistic value is great. All the "dots," in the right place.

You will peobably need some sort of an adapter to get from the generator outlets to the RV. This will depend on what outlets are on the generator. If your friend has used it for RVs before he may have what you need. Be sure you know how to connect it, do a dry run ahead of time.

I would be cautious about operating some of the electronics, ie. the microwave and the tv/audio, on a contractors generator. A laptop is probably ok since the power goes thru the battery.
