When I ran Spokane to Sunnyvale (San Jose) in March I got 21.4 mpg average all the way down. Coming back up (the same route) I averaged 20.2 mpg. But the answer to your questions is yes, you burn very little fuel coming down the backside. I would have to say I usually gain mpg coming down above what I had going up.

steve (sreigle): Not to hijack thread - they just opened up a new camping area on east side of River Pond area. Really nice area -- fighting poison Ivy right now though - years in the wild have given it a head start. Haven't tried it yet - just driven through.

Thanks, skypilot. I drove through there last Nov or Dec and they were still building it. I know they changed the entrance area all around. Maybe when I visit my folks this summer in Wamego I can take them for a ride to see what's been done.
