Cambridge goes to Newfoundland

We have not been on the forum much lately as we have been doing an Atlantic Canada trip. Most of the time we have had limited access to the internet. We started in Maine back in early july. We crossed NB, Criscrossed NS, ferried to NF and cris crossed it. We made it to Labrador and are now making our way back to a ferry headed for Nova Scotia again. Then we go to Prince Edward Island where the tour group will dispand. We plan to return to Michigan via Quebeq and down the west side of the St Lawrence.

We are on a "Tracks" tour with a great bunch of people. The country is great, the people are great. We have a new perspective on Canada. We average about 100 miles travel each day. The longest day was 260 miles. Many days we just get on bus tours with no driving at all. The longest stay in one location was three nights in Sidney NF to accomodate an overnight trip to Labrador.

Except for Peggy's cove in NS, the bugs have been tolerable. Roads are better than expected but still pretty rough in these outer regions. 40 to 50 mph is the order of the day for us.

As usual, I have posted a diary of our travels this year. It has lots of details about this tour. It can be found at
http://www.brickner.com/db/activitie...velogue06.html
The report is reverse chronological order

Hope all is well with our friends on the forum
Dave

PS: there is one Montana and our Cambridge among the 5 fifthwheels in this group of 22 rigs.

What an awesome trip, Dave and Victoria. Do you recommend a caravan for traveling in this area or is it a trip that could also be made on your own?

Thank ypu Dave and Victoria. That is the exact trip we are planning for next summer but on our own. This will help us a lot after seeing how the pro's do it.

I was beginning to wonder where you got to. Sounds like the trip (not the tour just the area) we had intially planned on for this summer but had to cancel. Maybe next year.

Glenn,
We had planned to get in touch with you crossing New England. Unfortunately, weather and repairs caused us to have to push to make schedule.

Judy and Helen,
The trip could definitely be done on your own. However, with all the ferry fees the overall tour cost did not seem very out of line. And, we saw some things that would be difficult on your own. For instance, the fireman auxiliary put on a supper of home cooked food especially for us. Also, the comfort of a familiar group is very nice. All of the advance reservations are covered and the campgrounds are all surveyed in advance. On the other hand it would be nice to make your own schedule. We toured some things that could just as well been skipped. As in most other RV activities, you make your own choices whether this sort of tour is for you.

Hi,
It sounds like you are having a wonderful trip.
we are heading out this saturday to Camden Maine, then on up to St. Johns were we will catch the ferry to Digby. We will be staying at The Ocean Cove campground in Annapolis Royal. Due to limited time we are looking for any suggestions you may have on what we must not miss. Also this our first major trip with our Monty. Any advise?

Thank Jerzy

Dave,
We did that trip in 2003, and I really do think Newfoundland is hard to beat. We thoroughly enjoyed the people, and the scenery is fabulous. I know it's a trip you will never forget. We did it on our own, but we saw several caravans up there.

Jerzy,
My best advice is be very careful loading and unloading from ferrys. Their directions may run you into a wall like they did me. Not a lot of damage but could have been avoided. Annapolis Royal area has several historic sites and tours. One especially fun is an after dark graveyard tour. We also toured the habitation and the Secret gardens as well asGrand Pre at Wolfville several miles north of Annapolis Royal.
At St John NB we were on a bus tour that included several returns to the reversing falls.
Have a good trip.
