PSD 6 in Ford Trucks

In all the forums (pro & con) on the PSD I have yet to see any reference to the fact that the engines are actually made by NAVISTAR INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION and are used in many different industrial applications!

Yes ford diesel's are produced in Indianapolis by international. That is one cool spot to visit on a tour. We went back in 2001 and watched them building the 7.3's. If you ever get a chance to take the tour it is neat to watch them test each engine.

I had two 7.3 PSD Navistar PSDs, both terrific engines I would own again.
I had an 04 6.0 PSD Navistar. I never will own another 6.0. I think the 05 and 06 models are more trouble free than the 03s and 04s but the 6.0 does not enjoy the same reliable reputation that the 7.3s do.
You only have to see the number of Ford 6.0s sitting on Chev, Dodge, Toyota, and yes even Honda lots. Can you imagine the level of frustration that the driver of a heavy duty pick up must feel to trade down to a light pickup like a Honda Ridgeline. I have experienced this level of frustration but I need a heavy duty truck to haul my Montana. I went V10 gas and I am very pleased with my decision so far.

IMHO,Navistar makes some fine engines, but the 6.0 is not one of them.

Hondas and Toyotas make terrific vehicles and I can hardly wait for them to get into the heavy duty pickup market.

I tend to agree with WT.Time will tell but IMO the 6.0 will not go down in history and one of Fords best. Navistar makes the motor yes but to Fords specs..therein lays the problem.I went with the Ford V-10 in 05 for many reasons (i would not have bought any diesel) We are hopeful that the 6.4 and the new generation of diesels and fuels in all the brands will be ones we can afford and buy with confidence.. The V-10 is and has been doing the job for us thus far. Our travels in the future say we need a diesel..I would like a really good one any brand...We will see..

Guys I have owned the 7.3 and the 6.0 Ford. I guess I have been one of the lucky one and have not had any issues with either. I will say that the later does not really have my heart like the 7.3 did, but it is growing on me. I can't bring myself to by a V-10 just due to fuel milage. I think that the diesel is beating them a little. I coule be wrong, but every driver is different.

Late 2005, 6.0 PSD, 48,000 miles, 16 to 17 mpg combined city and highway empty, 18 mpg highway (flat terrain), and about 10 mpg towing a 2005 3295RK with too much stuff in it . Not one problem yet, knock on wood. Love that truck!

Now I am not knocking the diesel..hope to have one in the future..but sweetfire gets 10mpg in the diesel towing and others get 10's and 11's..I get 8's and 9's with the V-10 towing the 3400. Pulled in my driveway with a 9.2 average over 500 miles last week in similar terrain. Not a big difference and IF the diesels see the efficiency loss that is predicted we may break even or worse. Now not towing the diesel beats the V-10 by a wide margin. I have never seen a 16,17 or 18 and never will..but then again we hardly ever drive the truck without the camper hooked to it.. I took a gamble by not going with the diesel in 05 and thus far am not feeling bad about it..

There's nothing wrong with the newer 6.0's ..... they definitely had problems introducing them, but they worked out the major bugs by mid-2004.

I've had the 7.3, and now have the 6.0 (2005). They are both great engines! I think Ford has also done well with the V10, especially for towing. All I know is, I love the torque/power/economy formula on the 6.0!!!!

I've had a 2001 7.3 and now a 2006 6.0. The 7.3 was a great diesel motor and had a longevity life span. In keeping up with the competition for horse power, tow ratings and emission requirements, I'm sure the Ford engineers had good reason to move to the 6.0. (I got to believe they know more than us back yard mechanics). Yes the initial 6.0 had some issues as did GMC and Dodge on some of their upgrades but they were resolved. And yes some people had bad experience on some of the Fords and again GMC and Dodge had similar issues. When buying something new - you can always get a bad one.....even a Montana.

IMO....My 06 F350 far out performs my previous 01 and does so in a much more refined and driveable way; and, I had my 01 chipped and 4 inch exhaust from the turbo back. I have not felt the need to do anything to my 06 for more power and it's been totally problem free. So far I am a happy camper! and I hope what ever truck you drive you are happy too. Isn't it great living in America where we have the products and the ability to make choices based on our own personal likes and opinions.

Steves I agree with the little need to add any after-market add-ons like I did on my 2000 7.3L. The only thing I have done is to add a cold air intake. As I said, I am learning to like ours more and more, but the old cubic inches of the old Vs the lesser of the new is harder to get use to.

Well, I'm on my second 6.0 and am very happy with the performance. My first one had the stalling problem. It was one of the early ones. The engine is very strong and much better than the early reputation it now has to live down. That's a shame because it's a fine towing engine. I also see no need to add any aftermarket performance goodies. This engine is fine as it is. By the way, I have yet to see more than an occasional 6.0 on any comptetitor's lot. I've seen more of the others on Ford lots. Maybe I've been in the wrong places.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

There are two 6.0 PSD's on my street. One is a 04 the other is a 06.. The 04 guy is as unhappy as he can be..the 06 guy thinks it is the best motor in the world/They both expected better fuel milage out of a diesel..They both tow boats..Such is life..We will be watching the 6.4L
