GM's Intermediate Steering Shaft.....

How many of you Chevy/GMC owners are feeling a clunking in the steering wheel. This clunking is most noticeable when turning at lower speeds. If you are take it to your Chevy/GMC and have them install a lube kit. Not sure if it's always the same number but the part # for my 05 is 26098419.
I had my Intermediate Steering Shaft replaced in my 03 Silverado but in the 05 they installed a lube kit and the problem, so far, has been corrected and it took about 1 hour to install.
AND don't let them give you any CRAP abut being "out of warranty". My 05 is still in warranty but they did try this on my 03 which had nearly 55,000 miles on it. After a call to GM customer service they fixed the 03 FREE. It is a fact that GM has had this problem in some of their P/U trucks but not all since 1999. Apparently after all these years they have done nothing to correct it. They say it is only an annoyance and will never become a safety issue and therefore owners will never hear about it.

Glenn,

Had the same thing, they first did some lube, that only lasted a little bit.

So, we got the shaft replaced. They told us that it was a re-designed part. No lubing required on the new ones. This work was done about 1.5 years ago. We were one of the first ones at our dealership to have the new re-designed part installed.

No trouble since.

Yeah, they tried the lube kit twice in my '03 and finally replaced the shaft. Just had the "kit" done on the '05 but the noise is still there. Guess I'll call again and tell them that the "fix" did not fix what needed to be fixed...! Hopefully they'll install a new intermediate shaft.

Thanks Glenn, I have been wondering what that noise was. Now when I take it in they won't be able to give me the run around.

Finally, I can share something on this forum, that I have had experience with. I too had the same problem with my steering. When I would turn the steering wheel back and forth, it made a clicking sound, that did not seem right to me. Luckily my son in law is a mechanic and had seen this problem many times. He replaced the intermediate shaft with a new one and hopefully that will solve the problem.

Actually, you don't even need the http. Just include the www, then dieselplace, then com with the periods inbetween. Like this... www.dieselplace.com . Just don't put anything but a space just before and after it or the url won't work. Notice I put a space before the sentence ending period. I got off topic. Sorry guys.

If the url doesn't have the www, then just put in the http:// . Like this... http://dieselplace.com

If your dealer wants to grease instead of doing it right, I would be very concerned if I took in my truck with other problems such as squeaky brakes !!! That sounds like two aspirin and a band aid for a lacerated artery.

My GMC just started doing this a week or so ago. VERY TIMELY that I ran across this thread. I have a oil change scheduled for tomorrow AM at my dealership. I have 128K on the truck - 5K since purchase. Intermediate steering shaft was changed out @ 40,907 on 03/27/2003. Tie rods - which I initially was becoming suspicious of - were replaced @ 97,744 on 04/12/2005, so I doubt that's it.

Clunking is EXACTLY as described here. Took the above advice and went to Dieselplace.com (my second most visited forum, anyway - but I missed this). Thanks to this thread, I will be able to have a discussion with my mechanic in a meaningful way tomorrow.

Thanks, Glenn!

I had the Intermediate Steering Shaft replaced on my last TV 2004 with about 18,000 miles on it, they showed me the old shaft and you couldn't see any wear, the new one was a lot better. I don't thank there is a safety factor in this problem. Now on my 2005 TV it is starting to feel the same way with about 20,000 miles.

Something that has me stumped is this has been an on going problem starting back in 99 or earlier. You would think after all these years GM would have figured out the problem and corrected it. This has to be costing them a fortune.

Yup, have had this issue in the last three GM products I've had.

First was in the '02 GMC Sierra heavy half. Took the dealer three trys til they got it right. Then, I traded it in on the '04 3500 Silverado D/A and had the same issue. The dealer fixed it but then about 3 months later, took it back because of other more serious matters and gave me the '05 that I have now.

Sure enough, at 25000 miles, the dealer has replaced this shaft.

And now, the world is good!
