Propane Tank Hoses too short?
I just changed out a tank for the first time on our unit - 2013 3900fb - and I struggled to get it reconnected. Seems like the hose is about an inch too short. I was able to lift up the tank and get the connector attached, however as I lowered it down it sure seems like the line is under tension. Anyone with similar problems?mmshould I just em pint the regulator a bit lower? Put a 1x6 under the tank?
Related to this, if I have one tank out for getting it filled, do I need to shut off the tank on the opposite side or can the furnace run with a tank missing?

no just go to Walmart and buy a brass gauge it will give you about 4 inches and let you know how juice you have not worth going back to dealer

I liked that idea until I looked at one. The problem is the vertical distance from the regulator down to the tank. From the regulator the hose essentially does a 180 degree bend down a few inches to the tank. If I added the gauge it would increase the horizontal length not help the vertical distance. But I might give it a try!

I have a 2005 and am not familiar with your unit I would say if the unit is no longer under warranty, stop by a propane shop and see what kind of extension the can make or could recommend, they may have some extensions you can use

Try turning the tank toward the regulator. The tank can sit in there at any angle you can hook it up solidly from. By turning it toward the regulator you will give yourself some extra slack.

I too have one tank with a VERY tight line on it. I plan to just get a longer replacement line. You can buy them in various lengths.

I agree with turning the tank. Ours requires the tank fitting to be turned to allow the hose fitting to be connected.
As to removing one tank while the other is still working, when the semaphore, the green/red indicator on the auto switching regulator turns red, you switch the lever toward the opposite tank, the full one, and the semaphore should turn green. Once that is done, you turn off the valve on top of the empty tank, which is the one the lever was pointing at when the semaphore was red, disconnect the hose fitting from the tank, and remove the tank so it can be refilled. Once the tank has been filled, reinstall the tank, aiming the tank fitting as needed to connect the hose, and re-secure the tank. Once you have connected the hose fitting and have satisfied yourself that it is tight, slowly open the valve. Once the valve is fully open, you should check for leaking gas, normally with a little soap solution. You are now good until the semaphore is red again, and then you repeat the process, only with the opposite tank.

Wow, that was great response and suggestions! I never knew how the semaphore thingy worked. As for aiming the valve, I tried most all positions. Even tho I am still,under warranty, I will probably go the longer hose route. They seem to be around $10 for an 18" hose.

Both of my hoses are a bit short. I have considered replacing both with longer hoses. You got to get the tanks turned "just right" to get the hoses connected.

In my opinion you should always carry an extra hose for when you encounter a blockage. I would go buy a longer hose and keep the short one with all my other spare parts!

no one is answering you 2nd question. i always turn the "other" tank off when I take a tank out, but you don't have to.
and if you hose is too short, just buy another one which is a little longer.

My lines are tight, but not short, just have to be sure the tanks are turned just right. And your furnace will continue to work with one tank our for refill.

I agree with this.
I also carry several 2X4 and 4X4 blocks in the truck bed mainly to put under the rear stabilizers and front jacks in soft ground / soft pavement but you can always slip one under the tank if you need to use a short hose temporarily.
I also turn the other tank off when I remove an empty one.
