Do you have a capture plate installed on your pinbox? If you don't you NEED to have one when using a Superglide automatic sliding hitch. I have a SB with Superglide and I have plenty of room with the tailgate down.

I guess the design must have changed over the years. We have lots of room behind the gate when backing up. Perhaps its the Moryride system?

A longer pinbox is what I need. I talked to Lippert today and they said I have a standard 1116 box, which can be swapped out for a 1716, which is 6" longer. This will give me about 4" clearance for the tailgate. My dealer is looking for a used one (has several from upgrade swaps)and will trade me even.I love this guy! The MorRyde is unnecessary with my Pullrite Superslide hitch and it would require an expensive adapter capture plate. The hitch is installed correctly. Even though the pin is about 8" ahead of the single axle, the whole hitch sits on two bed bars which are installed equidistantly. over the axle, so the weight is directly over the axle.

Would you not need a capture plate regardless of the pinbox brand?

Artfuldodger, you absolutely DO need a capture plate. Call Superglide and they will confirm that you need a capture plate if you are using a Superglide hitch, even with a long bed.

When I installed my non slide hitch the directions said the hitch was to be 2 inches ahead of the rear axel.
I can walk (sidestep) between the tailgate and Montana with tailgate down and hitched up ready to go.

Well I have fixed my problem by changing the 1116 Lippert pinbox to a 1716 Lippert pinbox as advised by Carl. I now have about 4" clearance at the open tailgate to the front of the 5r and the trifold tonneau does not get hit on an acute turn. Thanks to all who responded and a special thanks to Carl from Alberta!

Well I got a 2011 F350 long box last winter and just took it down to try the match-up. Everything looked great but when it didn't lock in I got out to take a look. The tailgate was down and had pushed against the cargo door. With the previous SB F350 I was able to hook up with the gate down. Live and learn I guess. Now I'm going to have to buy a new door(probably at the White Pigeon, Indiana surplus store)when we're down at the National rally in Goshen. Also I need to purchase one of those 5th wheel tailgates. Any suggestions about what to buy or stay away from? Thanks in advance.

I have the same truck and I can hook with the tailgate down. You have to be straight. If angled you will hit the door. Ask me how I know.ote]Originally posted by artfuldodger

The "V" tailgate is definitely the way to go. I have had one for years on three different trucks. Makes life so much easier and one less thing you don't have to remember to do. The Stomberg-Carlson is what I have always used. It is not the most fancy, but works well for a good price and has lasted for 8 years now (I did take it in and have it powder coated a couple of years ago to get rid of some surface rust). -Glenn

X2 on a "V" tailgate. I was spoiled by having a "V" tool box and no tailgate on the back of my TV. Sold the tool box and put my stock tailgate back on for more room in the bed of the truck. Now on this trip I am having to train myself to remember to deal with the tailgate when hooking up and unhooking, I hate it! As soon as we get back to our storage shed location in July I am taking off my stock tailgate and finding a "V" tailgate.
