Towing with an '06 Duramax

Hello all. We are new to the forum...going to upgrade from our current Laredo 25RL to a Montana. I am not sure which models I can safely pull with my '06 Chevy 2500HD with the Duramax/Allison combo. We like the RL models, but hesitate to go with anything above 34' because of weight. I would appreciate the input of those of you who are towing with a 3/4 ton truck. Many thanks.

I don't know the tow rating for your truck, but we tow a 2006 2955RL with a 2000 Ford 7.3 Powerstroke with no trouble at all. I had ours weighed once ready to go, and it was right at 10,900 lb.

Hope that helps, and good luck. We love the 2955, BTW.

Thanks. The tow rating for our Duramax is 15,000 but what I am concerned about is the GCVW (22,000) Power is not the concern, but good handling and stopping is.

Welcome to the forum. There is a WEALTH of knowledge here and I'm sure others will chime in. As you can see from my signature, we pull an '05 2955RL with an '06 Chevy. The 2955RL @ 34 feet is the smallest and lightest model that Keystone made in the Montana line but I believe that it has been discontinued. No problems with handling weight. I have never weighed the both of them but I believe GCWR is will within the limits of the truck. We have discussed a new Montana and I would be leaning toward the new High Country Models as they weigh much less.

We have pulled our 3075 across the country from NY to CA twice and from NY to FL three times and have loved it!
Our D/A is an 07 Classic. Before the 07, so it is just like yours. No pollution filters.
Enjoy the forum. Lots of good stuff!

One thing I have noticed in all of the discussions on 3/4 tons (and yes, I am aware that I am posting on a subject that I pledged that I never would) is that everyone always talks about the 3/4 tons stopping ability with a Monty in tow. With today's brake controllers and the range of settings, this confuses me since the rig has brakes as well??? The only concern I would have is the pin weight on the truck and whether it falls in the cargo capacity of the truck in question and the total combined weight of the two and whether it falls in the allowable ranges. This is a very controversial subject on many forums and the only advice I can truly give is to do your research and make your personal decision accordingly.

We tow a 3150RL with our 2007. It does a great job. I did add airbags to the truck.

Thanks. The tow rating for our Duramax is 15,000 but what I am concerned about is the GCVW (22,000) Power is not the concern, but good handling and stopping is.
15,000 is not a realistic tow rating. The actual tow rating is the GCWR, 22k in your case, minus the weight of the truck when ready to tow. So if your truck weighs 10k (800 over GVWR), your actual tow rating is 12k.

However, the weak link to all 3/4 tons is the ability to carry the pin weight and remain within specs.

I also has a 2955RL maybe the lightest Montana that was built. This trailer puts us 200lb over on my pin weight. I have airbags and a higher load rating on my tires, BUT it's still a 3/4 ton truck. As Bingo said there are other and sometimes more important limit, stopping ability. Last fall a truck pulled out in front of us, all four tires tried to lock up on the truck to keep us from hinting this (dummy). We did stop but the camper was pushing the truck. Sorry I was long winded, but pulling power I have lots of, stopping power is also important. Keep your total weight as low as you can get by with.

My 2500HD long bed crew cab weighs 7,140lb loaded with me in it. That would leave me 14,840lb for towing, can`t see why his 15,000 tow rating could not be realistic.

As usual a lot of people on thsi forum don't know the first thing about pin weight. Almost all 3/4 ton trucks will be over their pin weight pulling a Montana. That doesn't mean they won't "pull just fine all over the U.S., it just means they will be over their truck designed maximum weights. I have yet to hear of an accident caused by overloading of someones truck. Its a matter of preference if you feel comfortable pulling over capacity. Some of you aren't aware of it because you have never weighed yor setups.

Ron, The problem comes in when you add the pin weight of the 3400, and anything else you have in the truck. Surely you must be exceeding the 9200 lbs GVW or your truck. My pin weight on my '06 3400 is right at 3000 lbs. Take a more realistic pin weight of 2700lbs add it to your 7140 and that adds up to 9840. The problem with most 3/4 ton trucks is NOT the ability to pull or stop the Montana, but rather the GVW of the truck. That is exactly why I went to the one ton dually. Everyone must make the decision as to tow overweight or not, I made the decision not to.....

My pin weight is 2,480 and I am 420 over my GVW, I would rather have a one ton, thats what my next one will be. But the topic was tow ratings, not pin weight. I have weighted my rig several time and do know what a pin weight is. The tow rating on a 2500 is higher than on a 3500 dully, but not the cargo rating. I don`t think he should be told his tow rating was way off when it was very close. Some of the larger Montanas have lighter than the smaller ones.

Just check the spec's of the truck paying attention to Pin weight. The pulls it fine comments are of no help at all. You have to look at all ratings and spec's to understand what then TV can do or not do..

My 06 2500 Duramax pulls my 3585sa and has been no problem for me.I did add the airbags and it smoothed out the ride quite a bit.

Don't let it get to you; it happens everywhere. Man, you can't go out in the bay in that little boat. You gotta have a 25 footer with a 300 horse motor like mine to go out there! That 17 footer ain't stable enough. I really find it amusing, especially when I see those fenders broken and with duct tape holding them on.
