The Duramax is built in Ohio. After a few attempts at designing their own diesel GM wisely decided it was time to go outside for a diesel. Dodge has Cummins tied up and Ford had International so the choices were somewhat limited. The result has been such a good engine that they have been able to use that same design for going on 10 years now.

Charlie, just read the new 2011 Duramax is 60% all new parts. Same basic structure, no doubt, like Cummins when they went expanded the 5.9L to 6.7L to meet the 2007 and 2010 emissions standards. Modified the existing structure. Also, have read some very good things about the new Powerstroke. Ten million miles of testing in actual corporate environments and much better fuel mileage than with the 6.4L. I, for one, hope it's a winner. This country needs all three bigs to survive, in my opinion.

Steve.. Hope the Dodge truck survives. The Cummins is my choice of Diesel and I have many miles in the Cummins motor. The truck did not meet our needs.. The new Ford Diesel motor is built in Mexico so I guess if you are going to buy American a Ford is not in your future.

I'm not a GM loyalist. I bought the Duramax because I wanted the Allison Automatic. However, GM is repaying the taxpayers money and is on pace to do so ahead of schedule. The Duramax is an Isuzu design manufactured by GM. It is not built in Japan. Unfortunately Dodge has issued statements they do not intend to repay the taxpayers money on the basis they are emerging as a new company, and it was the old company that borrowed the money not the new Dodge. It doesn't appear that Dodge will recover to be in a position to repay the money. The Cummins Diesel is a great engine. Hopefully Ram will survive, or someone else will pick up Cummins.

I guess I dont see GM payin the money back for quite sometime when you take into consideration the stock that was given the government for quite a bit of the money they were given. I dont know if I care to have my taxes buy stock for the government. Bet they wouldnt bail us out if we didnt operate within our means. Al

I am glad to see that Ford is bitting the bullet and building a truck with its own diesel engine which is dissimilar to the others.
I will stick to Ford, they have provided me we good srevice for over 40 years of driving trucks and I can't complain. I just love some of the options (mirrors, tailgate step, interior styling) on a truck that you can't attain on the others.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a Ford chassis, Allison transmission and Cummins engine? That's my dream truck.

The 30K maint is due on our 08 F-350. I called our Local Ford dealer and asked them if they had a 2011 S.D on the lot. They do not so the coast is clear. Made an appointment for Monday AM.

Orv,
My prediction is the Cummins engine will end up in the Fords one day soon. Now if only they had a stout auto tranny to go with that as you wished for. I just don't like changing gears anymore.

Rich, What is your dealer's name? We can make sure they have one on the lot for you to look at.

We all know if Ford had taken out loans just prior to the economy downturn they would have been in the same position as GM and Chysler they have about the same labor contracts . Their plants has done the same as the others, most have moved South of the border. Because it just cost to much to build the same Vehicle in the USA. Were do you think the new Super Duty Diesel is being built (Mexico). Bad management. GM and Chylser will do the same thing, money to build cars that very few will buy.
I do believe the new Diesel Ford is building will be a winner, just hope for Ford that they don't have a lot of issues. But Ford says they have run the new Diesel thousands of miles. But when the new 2011's get into the hands of the real world users we will know. GBY....

For me, the jury will be out until the new engine gets run and run and run buy us real world users...Joe Sixpack so to speak. We've heard these claims by Ford in the past (6.0 and 6.4) both did not live up to specs. We'll see.

Ohh nooooo. Just did a build your own 2011 F-350 from a link provided by our dealer
http://bp2.forddirect.fordvehicles.c...#page=/Models/
Building a truck just like the one we have the price was 57,135.00. Now that does not include some of the goodies the 2011 has that the 2008 did not have. Also does not take into account any rebates, discounts or Ford plans (I do have the Ford X plan)
Trade in on my truck is 34,500 (first shot) (trade in on Ford site is 33 to 37K) The X plan & dickering would knock off about 10K 57-10=47 trade in 47-34,500= 12,500.
OHHHH Noooooo.

Gentelmen, both the Duramax and Cummins are known quanities. The new Ford engine is yet to be proven. I hope the new engine is as good as the 7.3 was and has none of the problems of the last decade of engines. We all have our favorites and that's good.
Everyone ( tv mfg's ) keeps raising the towing capacities. Is the next thing I will be able to tow is a house. Where is this going to stop. Why do I need a 40'long trailer that weighs 16k and can't or should not be towed by half of the folks out there. This biggest trailer, highest HP TV, most torque battle is a example of being told by the rv & tv mfg's that we must have something we really don't need.
How many of us need to have a 20k towing ability? This ability is in all reality only for bragging rights. These ratings come with a cost. How many of us need a 50k plus TV that can tow 20k? These new TV's are less fuel efficient and cost more to purchase and maintain.
RV mfg's need to step up and use more weight saving materials and reduce total rv weights. Then RV'ers would not require the 20K towing capacity or TV's that costs 50k plus.

Both Ford and GM clain their new HD trucks will get better fuel mileage. Many folks tow other things than RVs. I agree the prices are getting out of hand, but you can't stop progress. I for one will keep what I have until the wheels fall off. It was bought new and is garage kept. Hopefully it will last many more years.
