Superduty 6.7 "STOP SAFELY NOW"

Problem to be aware of if you own 2011/2012 Superduty 6.7 diesel. Not sure about 2013 and up.
At the end of a 25 mile drive towing a small utility trailer I suddenly got a message "STOP SAFELY NOW" on the information center. Happened just as I was about to pull off at the gate of some land I own. And as soon as I neared a stop the engine shut down. No restart. No limp mode. Fortunately I had just pulled off the highway and up to my gate so both truck and trailer were just off the highway.
Had to look in the manual to see what the message meant. It was due to high exhaust temperatures. Called Ford roadside service and they sent a tow truck (coincidentally they use Coach-net for their ERS provider) and took it to my local Ford dealer.
I searched the internet and found this a relatively common problem. The exhaust temperature sensors (4 of them) are prone to failure. And if one fails, it is likely the others may soon fail also.
Generally seems to happen at 70,000 or more miles. But I only have 24,000+ on mine.
When I picked up the truck the service advisor confirmed what I had read. But Ford will only replace them when they actually fail. Not because they MAY fail. I have worked with this advisor for many years and trust his statements.
This is not good. Had I had to stop at a traffic light or stop sign or for any other reason on the road, that is where I would have been stuck. Service report said the bad sensor was showing 2,505 degrees F.
I asked the advisor what the cost would be to replace the other 3. He quoted me $429 to replace the other 3 sensors. He said the replacments have been redesigned, hopefull eliminating the problem. Apparently the 2013 and up have newer sensors, but that was not clear.
I am going to have the other 3 replaced as a proactive measure to reduce the chance of being stranded on the road somewhere. ERS was very helpful, but it was still 2 hours before the tow truck got there, and this was in highly populated area. Don't want to test it across the TX panhandle or northern NM or similar with the Monte behind.

Yeah, me too. But found on the net where Ford actually did a recall on 6.7 ambulances last year due to the possibility of an erroneous shutdown while transporting a patient.

That was mighty near sighted of them. What if you were on your way to a hospital with a critical problem or descending a Rocky Mountain pass with a 6 ton RV behind you or....
you get the idea.

If you replace them you might won't to keep them. You know, just in case.

I had one go out (same message, etc.), with 16,000 miles on the truck, 1300 miles from home on the 4th of July. Fortunately the Montana was in a RV park in the Glacier Nat'l Park area where we were sightseeing. One local Ford dealer gave me a run-around about it would be 5 days to fix it, another towed me in, gave me a loaner vehicle and had mine fixed by 9:30 Monday am.

My local dealer says they are not having any problems with the newer version of the sensors.
