Dodge Front U-Joints
We own a 2007 2500 diesel. We have 48500 mils on it and found out today the front u-joints are bad. Another $650.00 for yet another problem. I love this truck, but it has been plagued with problems since day 1. Turbo issues, cooling system problems, windshield arm controls busting, and now the u-joints.
Anyone else having these issues with Dodge? I am losing faith on heading out for long trips. It seems to me there has been discussion about the front ends having problems, but the search shows no hits. I was leary buying this truck as it is the 207.5 with the new tranny and 6.7. I like to wait a year or two on major changes so others clean out the issues. Can you tell I am venting?

I have a 2009 and the only issue I've had with it is a recall for a tie rod end which they replaced free of charge. My truck is bone stock and runs great (Hope I didn't just jinx myself!) The only complaint that I have is that the stock tires only lasted 30k. I ordered a set of Michelin LTX M/S this week for it.

Same for me, minor problems but no big deals yet. I'm with Jay, I hope that didn't just open the door.

No problems with mine at 84,000 miles, and you can by a complete Mopar front drive shaft, assembled for $325 look on amazon, it will take about 30 minutes to R&R. Be sure that you lube the u-joint (the one that looks like a CV joint) it is the only part that is lubed, it uses a special grease gun tip, as it does not have regular zerts. Most quick lubes do not grease this joint. If it fails, the other u joint will be right behind, I have worked on several trucks with this set up. If its axle U Joints, well that's a whole nuther ball game.

I have a 2007.5 with 83,000 miles on it. I have had the turbo trouble and a leaky sunroof that still leaks if I would take it through a car wash. I also have had a few other problems before I had 50,000 miles on it but none since then. I am going to replace the front tires soon as they are original. I only got 40,000 out of the tires that were on the front so took the truck to Schawb and found out it was way out of alignment. As for the front U joints I have a 2WD which I bought because I did not all those extra moving parts under the front end.

52,000 trouble-free miles on mine. Love my 5.9!

Are you talking axle U joints or drive shaft U joints?

They are the axle u-joints. Just at the point, not sure if I trust it anymore as we have had so many problems. Would like to go a few months without a problem.

When I had ball joints replaced at 70k, also replaced the U joints with ones with grease zerks (ball joints and U joints). At 168k now with no problems. At the time the U joints were good but since the front end was apart anyway we changed them out too. Be sure you get new U joints WITH zerks. BTW 2004.5 3500 drw.

Got a call from the dealership and they already fixed the truck. I didn't think they worked on Saturday. Was intending to call first thing Monday and make sure they replaced them with ones w/zerts. I asked and was happily informed they put oem u-joints in and they are a sealed unit so I shouldn't have any issues. I asked why then did the OEM sealed u-joints fail this time. He changed the subject...Time to trade it in???

We have 93,000 miles on our 2006 3500 5.9 model with only one minor problem with a small coolant leak that cost $100 to fix. The Michelin tires still have good tread at 93,000 miles. We have about 35,000 towing miles with our 2006 3400RL. I absolutely love this truck and would not replace it except if it is badly damaged.

My 2005 - 25000 diesel had 90k miles when the transmission went out. Made the mistake and had the dodge dealer rebuild it - everyone tells me I should of had a tranny shop do it. Now I am concern about beginning to do long trips - is it going to give me headaches?

You might see if you can find out if the dealer actually did it or did he take it to an outside shop.
