SCREWED
Anyone ever have the heads of the screws on their slide end caps just fall off when touched? I have had several of the white square drive screws on the slide end caps that when I touched them the head of the screw just broke off leaving the shaft of the screw. Now my problem is how to get to old screw shaft out so I can replace the screw. Any suggestions?

Drill out the screw shaft and use the next size larger screw for the replacement.

Had it happen first day I had unit. Use a good centre punch (I like the spring loaded) and then using the drill end of a screw extracter that is the right size drill a hole in the screw shaft. Be careful and keep the drill straight. Then use the screw extracter end making sure to push hard as you turn it with a bit holder. Extracters can be bought in most hardware sections. Sears had a good one but not sure it is still available.

I went around one time checking all screws to see if any were loose. And 2 or 3 of those heads fell off as soon as I touched them. Seemed as though they had already been overstressed.
I just bought some similar screws at the hardware store, drilled a pilot hole close to the broken screw, and installed a new screw. I used a white paint pen to paint the head of the new screw and the end of the broken ones. Not something you would even notice if not looking for it.

OK trust me on this. You can buy drill bits that drill holes going counter clock wise. So you would be drilling in reverse and that is how the screw wants to come out. If it's not overly tight the bit will grab the screw and back it out. Remember to smile when you ask for that kind of bit and the people look at you like your nuts.

Swanny, I hope you meant reverse threaded not left-handed.... I can't recall the clever name, but I wonder if that infomercial with the dual tap outs would work. The first tap creates a seat for the second tap and the second tap removes the broken screw. I am not sure it's got the beef for fixing this problem.

Thanks for all the replies. I did just what BB_TX had done, but I had 5 screw heads fall off. Bill I did just as you did today, bought stainless steel screws the same size of the old ones, sprayed the head white, drill right on the old screw and for the most part made a hole right next to the old screw shaft, used white caulking, and screwed the new screws in. Looks good...DW couldn't tell which ones had been replaced. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

We had the same problem with screws in the mounting brackets after having slide toppers installed on our last rig. When I washed and waxed it after having them installed, about 40% of the heads of the screws just fell off when I went over them with either the wash mitt or wax rag. I took it back to the dealer where we had them installed and they replaced the screws. When I got the rig home I replaced all of the screws on the brackets with stainless and the next size up. I just painted the heads white and coated the threads with white silicone before putting the new ones in. Here is a link to a place that sells them already to go, although they are Phillips head not the square head (I got this link from somebody on the MOC) Bolt Depot I haven't checked the ones on the new rig....yet. Sounds like another project to add to the list of things to do

Thanks Swanny! Heading for Lowes tomarrow to pick up one of those "left handed bits"! I am always breaking off screws here at the stick and those will come in handy here and on the road! Heck, I'll pick up two and have one in the toolbox on the Monte just incase! Thanks again!

When we go on the factory tour at the fall rally while everone else is looking at the Montana assembly line I am looking at the floor picking up all the screws laying about. After 3 years of tours we have a special section in our tool box of Montana screws, All sizes, all lengths. Helen thought I was nuts as usual, till screws wound there way out of the fender flairs and we had exact replacements.

Good idea Rich! I'll have to remember that when we are at the factory! By making that statement, you'll probably see all kinds of guys and maybe even gals looking down at the floor!

I stand (sit at my keyboard) corrected Swanny. My apologies for doubting you. I guess they are called, left handed bits, counterclockwise bits or I've heard old-timers call them reverse bits (the bits drills in a reverse direction of standard).

Don't you know that those bits are for us left handed guys? It's the left handed hammers that are hard to find.
