Question on our A/C for the all powerful Ozz?

Oh great one behind that curtain....can you tell me when it becomes very problematic for the a/c with low voltage? With our new solar panel system I installed a Progressive EMS and right now both lines of the 50 amp coming in fluctuate between 118 overnight when usage in the park fades off to 102, 103 during peak hours in the afternoon.

How much can these units take before the compressor motor goes? I was considering getting an autoformer figuring this is not going to be the last camprground like this...

Thanks in advance for tapping your hvac experience.

Les

Most Motors will handle Plus or Minus 10% voltage your Low would be 108V
I would urn it off and open a window LOL

I would think at that voltage the EMS should be shutting the power off to protect things.

I agree with that, I thought the EMS shut off the power at 104 volts? I checked their website to verify that.

102 volts is dangerous low for 115 volt motor. I agree EMS should shut power off between 104 and 105 volts. How did you measure voltage?

Can't specifically answer your question, but I can support you Autoformer consideration. We camp at a few lakes where that very scenerio occurs in the peak summer months ... park voltage drops significantly ... A/C just didn't sound normal and just didn't seem to work right. Installed a 50amp Autoformer and never had the issue since. Perhaps it was just my situation, but Autoformers do not like generators. I have a Kipor 3000 watt ... I forgot to bypass a 30 amp Autoformer on outing on my old rig ... genset did some real groaning for a few seconds, then smoke wiffed out of the Autoformer. I had to send it in for repair. I've always bypassed it since.

Good point!!!!! Our installation is the generator is on one leg of the automatic transfer switch, shore line with Autoformer that can be disconnected is on the other. Our EMS is on the output of the transfer switch purely for monitoring purposes since it is not really needed on the generator leg.

Thanks folks. The EMS does shutdown at 104.....I had to use the internal bypass because it was turning on and off to much.....I am looking to get the autoformer now as it is getting no better.

Be aware that some CGs do not allow autoformers.

One additional question. While watching the EMS, before the a/c compressor turns on the line voltage reads between 112 and 115 but as soon as the compressor kicks on the line voltage drops to 102 to 104.

Thoughts?

Sounds like the campground has undersized wiring that can't handle the amperage

As our learned MOC folks have stated, low voltage is a bad, bad thing, and the 10-15% is about all they desire before being damaged.
I have been installing 3 phase monitors and protection units on my commercial customers, a $10,000 25 Ton compressor change just isn't in the budget for most business owners.
Don't know much about the EMS devices, but if they are programmed right, they should allow for 10%, but probably not much more.
I, and most of you can tell if you have low voltage, lights dim, appliances sound different, and that's when you look at that voltage monitor you all have... right? plugged into the wall outlet.
Good luck out there.
Ozz

Well folks quick update....our Hughes Autoformer came in and it instantly made the difference! It is keeping the voltage around 112 to 115 with the air running...
Phew dodge bullet....

Thanks for all the advise.

I am equally happy that I put the Progressive EMS into the rig when I did the solar, otherwise I might never had known had bad the voltage had gotten. One day it dropped to 98....yes 98!
