Putting receiver hitch on Montana

Has anyone put a receiver hitch on their Montana? I am looking for a place to keep a portable generator. One dealer told me never to do it because even a small amout of weight in the back would damage the sidewalls. I guess stress cracks. Another dealer said it would be fine as long as I did not exceed 500 pounds. But both said it would void my warranty. I currently use a portable generac. But it is a pain to lift it over the hitch before and after the trip.
