Water Heater Element replacement

Suburban gas/electric 6 gallon heater - Is the heating element accessible from the access door(outboard side of the heater)? Do I have to remove a bunch of stuff to get to it ? Can a replacement be bought at Lowes or Home Depot ? or must I get one from an RV supply ? Any suggestions if I find it and decide to replace it ? Can I check it without removing it ?
