Ford Tow Boss Option.
Does anyone have any info on the Ford Tow Boss option. According to Ford and Trailer Life , it takes the 05 350's to 26K GCWR with 4.30 rear end. This is another option in addition to the Tow Command brake controller. Thanks

I Have the Tow Boss package and love it it does give you a lot more towing ability and it is rated at 26,000 lbs GCWR but if you get it don't look for high fuel mileage I get 12- 13 mpg town 15 HWY and 8-10 towing a 05 3685Fl

The tow boss package is the 6.0 psd and the 4:30 rear diff..however in late 2005 Ford began to offer the 4:30 rear diff with the 6.8L motor which I got. It raised the tow limit to 16,100 and the GCWR to 23,500 on the 6.8L. The 6.0 psd adds @ 3,000lbs to both limits...

Max tow rating on the F350 with Tow Boss is 19,200 for fifthwheel towing. I think there are lower ratings with the Tow Boss, also, but am not sure what makes the difference. GCWR is 26,000 as noted above.
I guess the 4.30 gears must drop the mileage since ours with 3.73 (not Tow Boss) gets considerably better mileage than that?

One of my Ford Eng friends tells me that the 4;30 Diff will drop the rpm's by @ 200 as compared to the 4:10.You would not think that would make that much of a difference im MPG.I am doing 13.5 average hiway driving on my beasty and @ 11 in mixed driving.Have not really towed far enough to see what will happen there. I just wanted the extra pull power in the 6.8L. I really do not keep track of MPG..I already know it stinks. If I was concerned about MPG I would have taken up Golf as a pass time instead of Rving///

Rich, our numbers were very similar to yours when we had the '99 G350 with 6.8 V10. Our towing numbers averaged 8.2. When bucking heavy headwinds it could easily drop into the 5.x and 6.x range though. On really good days we'd get 9.5 to 10. Then we'd go uphill again and screw up the numbers. Strong it is. Thrifty it aint. Still a very strong tow-er, though.

Steve. We will be going on a 1500 mile adventure soon and will see what the numbers are. We got about the same MPG numbers pulling with our trusty silverado. We will be pulling this @7000lb Terry TT with the big Ford 6.8L I don't think 6.8L will know it is there. Now when we get the 3295 Montana.....whole different ballgame....

Rich, the 3295 loaded for fulltiming was what we pulled through Colorado with the 6.8. I think you'll love the way it tows the Montana and the Terry. With only 7,000 lbs in tow you will need a radar detector or good throttle discipline. You'll be surprised how well it handles the Montana, too.

Steve..Strange you should mention the Radar detector.Never had one in our Trusty Silverado.Did not have to worry about speeding as it was pulling at capacity. However there IS one in the F-350 as I expect 7000lbs will not be much of a challenge for the 6.8L.

I don't know where you are going on your trip but when we were in Virginia back in March I remember seeing signs about use of radar detectors being illegal. In my youth I would have cared about that but in my more "mature" years I just keep speed to no more than five over. Last speeding ticket was in April, 1978. I probably just jinxed myself.

Actually we will be going through VA..We do not use the detector for speeding, haven't had a ticket in over 30 years. Use it for the detect emergency vehicle feature as we were nearly run down by a fire truck because we never heard it coming. We have Cobra's in both of the cars as well as the truck for that purpose although I have to admit that this this Ford SD is HARD to keep at the speed limit. Because the Silverado was always at the tow limit we did not use Cruise control much on the interstate as it shifted around to much .The Sd may be ok????
