50 Amp Extension Cord

We still don't get far from home, but I'm hoping in the near future we will. Currently I carry but rarely use the 30 amp extension for the 30 amp cord. Most places we go to are only 30 amp.

I want to plan for the day when we can travel, and I will only take the 50 amp cord (along with a 30 amp adapter).

So, the question to this long intro is, in your experience, do I need a 50 amp extension cord?

They are relatively inexpensive and if you need one it will be a life saver. I have a 50 amp receptacle I installed at my house and I use an extension when plugged in here so I can park the rig in a better place while packing it.

I'm replacing the 30 amp with a 50 amp receptacle tomorrow here at the house. That's what got me thinking.

In all the places we have been I only needed a 50 amp extension one time. But that time I had to have one. And I didn’t have one. Fortunately a park employee saw my dlemma and loaned me one. Bought one as soon as we returned home.

But I still carry my 30 amp cord for those occasions we only have 30 amp hookup. It is much easier to roll up and put away in cold weather than the big 50.

When we first started RVing folks were stealing power cords occasionally to sell for the copper. I got a 50amp extension cord and made a dog bone for it so I could use it in place of the regular cord or as an extension. So far we have only used it twice, both times as an extension cord, but both times it was for most of the winter and so we really needed it.

In all our years of travel, have never needed an extension cord.

Getting ready to do a 10 week cross country trip. I read this thread earlier and just ordered a 15 foot 50 amp extension. You just never know, and we'll be staying in a bunch of different campgrounds.

You don't need that extension cord .... until you do. Most of the time while traveling we just use that much easier to handle 30 amp cords. Then there are the really hot times when we need the 50 amp service and the 12,000 watts for the second a/c. We have used that extension cord just often enough to justify its cost. Ours - took a chance on a (HEAVY!) 30 foot ebay seller and it ended up being decent quality though not all sold there are

We have a 50 AMP extension cord. First trip We were 2' too short and needed the extension. Could not pull forward because we wouldn't fit if we did. Also, kept out 30 amp extension. Look at is as insurance I have already paid for.

Yup, I got the same one last year. Coincidentally, I had to use it the very next time we went out! Better to have it and not need it, etc . . . .

Have one like in the link. Got it after campground employee loaned us an extension. In 7 years of carrying a 15 foot 50amp extension I've used it enough to consider it paid its dues. Didn't use it for a couple of seasons then used it multiple times the next season. You just never know.

Thank you all for your responses. I believe I'll be on the lookout for a 15' to 25' extension.

We are long timers. We have been travelling all over the country since 2006. We stay in every size and description of Campgrounds and fairgrounds for rallies. We have every extension known to the RV industry. Waste hose, water hose, power cord and every known adapter . We do have a 50AMP extension cord.We have used the extension cord many times around the country. You do not need any of the aforementioned extensions till you need one. For the fall rally in Sept we will be using the waste hose and water hose extension.

Whitewolf, we have a 25ft. 50 amp extension cord, at some campgrounds it allows us to park in any spot within the lot. Sometimes when traveling cross country we can better level without unhooking by moving backwards/forwards a bit and we don't have to make sure we will be within reach of electric pedestal. Same goes for water hose, coax cable etc. You can get reels for each and they will stay organized and in place while traveling.

We use ours a lot. It allows us to position the camper how we want.

You can usually buy a -remade extension cord cheaper than buying the parts to fabricate one
