Hydraulic pump breakers

Have read about the 50 vs 80amp fuse replacements. Never followed closely, because I never had a problem. My turn cause after all these years with Montana units, I am having a problem.. Re the 80amp breakers, what is the specific 80amp I need to purchase?

I used an 80 Amp HI-AMP BUSSMANN BUSS CIRCUIT BREAKER 184080F Manual Reset. Paid a little over $30, plus shipping, last year. We have had zero issues since the change. I believe there is an auto reset model made, but so far it has not been an issue. Got it from an Ebay vendor, http://www.ebay.com/itm/80-Amp-HI-AM...-/141120902895

Or save a little money and go with these that I used after some kind forum contributor made me aware of them:

80 Amp Auto Reset Breaker

And I did purchase two of them, the posts are larger than the OEM models, and I had to cut the connection loops and spread them a little to allow for fit around the larger posts on the breakers.

I only used one 80 amp breaker. The way our unit is wired, and I suspect all are, is the hot wire from the battery goes to the first breaker, another wire attaches to the same post as the first and goes to the second breaker, so it doesn't matter where the breaker is that goes to the pump. When you are doing this job, make sure you check all the connections, from the battery to the breakers and all the connections at the pump and switches on the pump. I found a couple nuts that were loose.

I, too, used an 80 amp manual reset and it has never tripped yet. (Maybe I should'nt have said anything). Murphy's law, you know!

Hi

I will say it again. I have never in 5 years had the hydraulic breaker trip on our trailer and we use it a lot.

I would be very cautious about increasing the sizes of the breaker in my trailer.

I have added a 100 amp fuse at the battery. This would prevent the damage reported here when something happens to the wiring from the battery to the battery disconnect switch.

The increase in breaker size to the hydraulic pump is a factory fix for the problem experienced by the rigs with the levelup system. The 40 amp breakers tripped so often, that they would burn the contacts and get worse in use. The wiring in the newer rigs, ours is a 2012 with factory levelup, and was one of the first rigs with the system, has larger cable from the batteries to the breakers and pump, and is in no danger of overload with the use of the 80 amp breaker. I never had a problem with the slides overloading the 40 amp breaker, just the leveling system.
