Dual Zone AC

Question we have: We just bought our new Montana. Came with two AC and the two zone thermostat panel. In regards to the bedroom upstairs (Zone 2), is it best for us to leave the AC vent open? If we close the vent, does the front AC force more cold air through the ducted vents in the trailer? Is the from AC even pushing air out of the two vents in the bedroom? Not sure what to do. We have never had two AC units before.

I think you will find that the bedroom (front A/C) is Zone 1 and the living room (rear A/C) in Zone 2. As for the vents, did Montana start putting in closable vents?

I keep the dump vents closed most of the time in the front AC to directed more air through the ceiling vents. If it's really hot and I want a quick cool down (for me, not the rig), I'll open the dump vents and sit under it to cool off. That's about the the only time they are open.

With the bedroom dump vent closed, does the second AC on top of the bedroom direct air through the duct system to the main living area with the rear AC running or is it just forcing cool air out of the two circular vents in the bedroom? I guess I need clarification on how the duct system works with two AC units running at the same time

In our unit, the bedroom is Zone 2 and the living room is zone 1 with the whisper air. The bedroom AC is ducted throughout the fiver. Closing the bedroom ac vent makes it quieter in the bedroom and pushes more cold air into the ducting. If you run both at the same time, cools the unit faster through the shared ducting.

The living room AC is zone1and bedroom is 2. The dump door on the BR AC are for quick cool down. In normal operation both supply cool air through vents throughout coach. There is a small conical device near the ceiling in the BR. It is the sensor for the bedroom. Therefore dual zone. The temp for each zone is set separately on the thermostat. We usually like our bedroom cooler. It's a good system.

We want the bedroom ac to run more of the time in order to equally share the load so we have the dump in the bedroom 3/4 closed so it sends more cold air out of the bedroom then it dumps in. Try different things and you'll find what works best for you and the way you us your rig.

Our bedroom (zone 2) generally has the interior roof vent closed unless we want to cool the bedroom quickly. Another thing we use our Zone 2 for is when camping in noisy campgrounds we set it on "low fan" and open vent. It masks the noise from outside the camper and lets us sleep.

They must have changed the zone assignments since they built my unit in 2009. Looks like the newer units are zone 1 for rear, zone 2 for front.

Did not realize the vent referred to was the quick dump thought it was the round ceiling vents. My ceiling vents are not closable.

Is the front AC unit on the new units still through the ceiling in the bedroom and not configured like the L/R for quiet running? If so, does it still wake you up at night when it comes on? We set our zone 2 (L/R) unit to a lower temp at night so it comes on and not the zone 1 (B/R) unit. During the day we reverse that setting so the L/R unit does not come as often.

Yes Steve, Zone 1 is the LR and Zone 2 is now the BR. We haven't run the ACs at night yet and YEA, no AC today. Finally nice temps in the 70's

Just remember that the BR unit is in the same zone as the furnace.

Wow, there are some differing set ups. In our 09, unlike some of you out there, LR is zone one. Reason is simple; many do not get the second AC unit up front, so LR unit is zone 1 and only! If you add 2nd AC, it's zone 2. Also, unlike Stengels, our furnace is the same zone as LR, not BR, probably for the same reason. That's how the factory sent it out.
