We used a 2002 Chevy HD3/4 for years and moved up in size 2 years ago. the 2005 c5500 makes the job much less work. The two rear wheels and extra vehicle weight take a lot of the fight out of towing the big Montana. It sounds like you are making an excellent choice.

We tow with a 2012 2500 and before that a 2004 2500hd. I would have gotten a 3500 had I known they only cost about #1500 more. I expected $4000 or more. MUCH more bang for the buck per weight limits. Truck max is 10000 with 2500 and almost 1500 more with a 3500 - which would allow almost any pin weight they can trow at you.

Who is towing with a 2500HD. Those that are wanting to be overweight or at their GVWR limit with no safety reserve.

The difference in cost of a 2500 over a 3500 vehicle is not that much. Unless you are in a state where anything over 10K gross is considered a commercial vehicle and insurance goes thru the roof.

But, you play, you got to pay.

WOW. I know I only have 900-1000 pounds of safety zone, but I'm happy with that. I knew when Chevrolet introduced the beefed up suspension and frame to go along with the trailering package, air brake and beefed up breaking system, this was the truck I needed. Had no desire to purchase a 1 ton, as my rig is the heaviest and largest I will ever have. I'm sold on the electronic capabilities of the Allison transmission and the Duramax will pull anything. My E rated tires provide me great wear and protection. In the 4 situations when I had to shut things down in a hurry because of some idiot pulling out in front of me, I never had any doubt that I would get things stopped. However, if someone pulls from a stop sign in front of me, I'm pretty sure I will hit them. Love my 2500 HD.

I tow with a 2500HD. If you are not overweight and within your limits you should be fine if you drive within your skill and comfort level. A "cushion" is already built in to the trucks as long as you do not go over your limits. I also am a mechanic and hold a CDL and make sure my truck is very well maintained. I have seen F550's in my shop so worn out they shouldn't be on the road, let alone hooked up to the monster rig they are towing. There are things you can add to make yourself more comfortable, like an exhaust brake, but I would disagree that you have to have to be a certain percent capacity over your trailer weight. In fact, if you look, you will find that things like rear differentials will be identical between 2500 and 3500 trucks even. I have a good friend with an F550 towing a trailer way under his capacity and he is such a poor driver that I wont ride or travel with him. He has rear ended 3 people while pulling a trailer that weighs 10,200 on the scales ready to go.

I will re-state that you must not exceed the posted limits on your truck. All that said, I will be replacing this truck with a 3500 or 4500 series this year. My RV was within limits and had room for more when I pulled it across the scale new, but mods and now fully loaded, I am going to be taking it to the scale next weekend (its on a seasonal lot right now)to make sure and that will be the deciding factor on whether the new truck shows up next month or in the spring. I will not risk someones elses family because I am overweight, even with all my little extra truck mods. Also, every time we get another RV it seems to get bigger LOL.

I tow a lighter Montana with a 2009 GMC 2500 I picked up used. I have about 13,000 on the rig with no issues. Stops when I put on the brakes goes as fast as I need it to go and looks like it should last a long time. The only beef I have with the truck is its a short bed.

We tow with a 2007 2500HD Duramax/Allison Chevy truck.. Best truck we have ever owned. Have added airbags with on board compressor and electronic Pac Brake. Truck has 60k miles, most miles while towing this or our previously owned toy haulers. We always check tire pressure and monitor the tires and rear end heat while traveling. So far, never an issue. Granted, Pete was at one time a semi truck driver, so handling the rig and managing equipment is not a problem. We have run the scales with our loaded toy hauler and the Montana. Yes, we are definitely loaded, but not overloaded. We have discussed upgrading to a one ton Chevy dually and may do so if we pull the trigger to go full time.

I have towed a 3150 montana with a 2009 2500 hd GMC with a 6.0. Never any issues. Was a great truck. Had a 2011 3500 SRW w/ 6.0 again never any issues. My newest baby is a GMC 3500 Duramax SRW Denali. This is the best yet. Quiet, rides like a dream empty and hauls like nobodys business. Our company ford is also awesome, I just prefer the GMC as my daily driver and when on vacation. GM trucks have been very reliable for me.....Enjoy
