2015 F250 Braking

Still reading all the manuals on my new truck. Correct me if I am wrong.

Using the Tow/Haul mode uses the transmission to slow the down hill speed while towing or not towing. If you push the " Diesel engine brake " switch on the dash board a light will illuminate in the instrument cluster when this feature is switched on. You can use this feature with tow/haul to provide further increased engine braking.

Can this feature be used when not in tow/haul? Should this feature always be used while in tow/haul?

I had heard they were adding a new switch on the dash for the exhaust brake. Will be interesting to hear just exactly how it does work.

In all the Fords and Chevy's I've driven that have the Tow/Haul switch, the only thing that happens is the shift points are changed, meaning, the shifts are delayed some before allowing a shift up to the next gear. I don't believe the exhaust brake needs the Tow/Haul to function. I do know, at least with a Chevy/GMC, that the exhaust brake system will function with the transmission to downshift when you have the cruise engaged. We typically go down grades with the cruise set, and rarely have to touch the brakes, never going over 5 mph over the set speed.

I use exhaust brake towing or not. It can be used in regular driving or in tow-haul. It should be used whenever you are towing to help slow the rig without having to use the brakes heavily. Play with it--you'll find out he trucks computers are a whole lot smarter than you knowing when to downshift, etc. At least they are smarter than me.

Not sure about the Fords, but the Ram's switch works whether in tow/haul or not. I would assume if they added a switch your's works that way also. I also always use mine towing or not.

I knew the aftermarket folks have now released a true exhaust brake setup for the ford and chevy, but I hadn't paid attention to what was on the new 2015 models. This will work same as it did on my old motorhome...if on, when you take your foot off the throttle, tranny will go to lesser gear and the exhaust vane will close down. Result, wonderful slowing power without touching brakes. Tow/haul changes tranny shift points AND closes the turbo vanes to arrive at a reduced speed. Work together- they should. John
